STUPID QUESTIONS

The Pet Story

Kathryn Neff Perry
Why is it that my kids only have one speed when they are doing something for me, like the dishes. They wash two cups, one fork and maybe a dinner plate, and the rest of the dishes "have to soak."
I remember once I asked one of them to run the sweeper. I think they either said, "I just ran it for you two weeks ago, or "I'll do it after while".

I think more than anything, I love the "pet story".

"Please Mom, please. It always starts out. "Everybody I know has a cat. It isn't fair that we can't have one. Angela's Mom is letting her get one of the kittens too."
"Besides, I promise I'll take care of her. I'll feed her everyday and I'll clean the litter box."

Well, after two weeks of arguing and feeling guilty because I'm not like everybody elses mom, I finally did give in.

The day she brought the cat home was a ritual that should have had media coverage.

She carried in cat litter, a litter box, a color coordinated "little scooper" and 17 "educational toys" for the little cat. Who could also, by the way catch mice.
Julie bought three different kinds of gourmet cat food, because she didn't know what kind "kitty" would like.

Now just three months later, the cat has run out of the cat food my daughter bought. Her littler box "runneth over" and as far as the mice go, she did catch one. She brought it to me. She sat down in front of me, turned the mouse loose, only to catch it again and of course turn it loose again.

I asked Julie a stupid question just the other day. I asked her if she knew how many times the cat used the litter box in three months.

She gave me a disgusted look (she was doing her nails), but she assured me she would "get to it tomorrow".
