Sturbridge Massachusetts Hit by Tornadoes

Sturbridge Massachusetts, which is known for its quaint country atmosphere, was hit by tornadoes today June 1st. They were hit at a couple times in between 4-7 o'clock pm.

Never have I experienced such weather like this before. The skies grew dark very quickly, the wind picked up, golf ball sized hail fell from the sky, and a funnel actually touched the ground destroying everything in it's path. Tree's were uprooted, cars were flipped over, and roof's were ripped off.

Sever thunderstorms are very common to this area, also a tornado warning is not that unlikely. However, to actually have several tornadoes touch down in one area is unheard of. This is the east coast, not the mid-west,most people never worry about tornadoes hitting, never mind know what to do when one hits.

I was in my house with my niece and nephew when I got word that the tornadoes were heading our way, at first, I was in disbelief, as mentioned before -- we get warnings but never an actual tornado. It wasn't until I heard the hail falling that I became panicked. We don't have a basement, we don't have a single room without windows - not even our bathroom is windowless. We had no where to hide.

Thankfully the tornado stayed clear from our house, however, I cannot say the same for a lot of local businesses and family and friend's house. The Days Inn hotel is gone, the Public House, Post Office, and a local auto body shop are destroyed.

The tornado warnings are extended until 11:00 pm tonight, but I think the worst of it has passed. I at least hope it has.

I grew up in Sturbridge. My parents build the Sturbridge Moter Inn, now the Days Inn, which opened in May 1954. The current owners, the Patels, are the third owners. How sad that they have lost the result of the 15 years of care and love they put into the property. I stayed there in the late 90's and it was clear that the Patels maintained the standard of excellent established my the previous owners.

I'm also sadden that the surrounding woods, where I spent much of my childhood, were decimated and that, the Publick House, the finest restuarant and inn in central Massachusetts is "gone." I hope that both the Days Inn and Publick House are able to rebuild, though the Days Inn won't be the same without its surrounding woods of, by now, 75-80 years old oak trees.

I send the people of Sturbridge my love and my prayers for the speedy rebuilding of damaged properties.
    Best Regards,
