Style Tips for the Older Ladies

Saving the Older Generation from Style Mishaps

As you get older it may be hard to let go of the hip-hugging low cut jeans and skimpy halter tops that I have seen many older women sporting in the past few years but there is a better way to communicate who you are through your clothing without looking like you rummaged through your teenage granddaughter's closet. The older you get the more sophisticated you are supposed to become, shouldn't your wardrobe reflect that? Here are a few tips to help get the sophisticated look you have earned.

If more skin is exposed than you want to see on your kids or if it just doesn't make you comfortable, don't waste money on it. Get clothes that are universal and can be switched around to make man different outfits; avoid matching top and bottom pairs. The exceptions are pant suits which are definitely in style and should only be purchased in neutral or black. These can be worn with a dressy undershirt to complete a more sophisticated look. Dresses are always appropriate and sophisticated as long as they adhere to the rules. Dresses should be at least to the knee, even below if desired, and shoulder pads must not be included, you're just asking to look like a professional football player if you wear them. Always avoid the typical large floral prints and opt for more delicate softer prints to make you stand out without being overly verbal. Avoid adding too many accessories to any article of clothing as it will make people assume you trying too hard. Sophistication should come natural to you and should be reflected in your attire.

For a casual wear you can chose a light jean, preferably with a straight leg, and match it with a dress shirt or polo. This avoids the typical stretch pant and t-shirt look most people sport. For an evening out with your friends or relatives, chose either a wispy dress with a soft pattern matched with light accessories and flat shoes or a dress pant and button-up shirt for a more casual look. If you must achieve a business look always go with a pant suit, it's an essential to every wardrobe. Black usually works best paired with a bright shirt underneath to give you a sense of wonder and color. Any formal events should require a longer dress with heavier accessories and appropriate hairstyle; typically go for a black dress in addition to a slight heel. To achieve more expensive looks, pair correctly fitted dress clothing with lighter accessories an up do, if possible.

You can purchase clothing from any major retailer, such as Belk or JC Penny, or even small local shops with unique clothing as long as you pair the articles together correctly. Get in style and achieve the sophisticated look you desire simply by buying the right clothing, so go shopping!
