How to Get the Hair Style You Want

Lisa White ISSA & AFPA CPT
As many women will admit changing or creating a hairstyle you love can be one of the days hardest achievements. Naturally curly haired women want straight hair while straight haired women are paying for perms to have a head full of curls. This cycle has gone on for years and even after your stylist has achieved the look you want there are many tricks to keep the style up-to-date and fresh. The real secret is learning the tricks of the trade and putting them to good use. Here are some tips to keep in mind when trying to achieve your hairstyle.

Chemical Treatments

When it comes to coloring your hair it's easy to go over board and begin applying color and expect it to look instantly better. Sometimes this works while other times you create a mess only your stylist can repair. When doing your own color use the color of your hair at the moment to gauge your future color; even if it is dyed or has high or low lights. Try not to lighten or darken your hair by more than two shades at one given time and if you plan to do a drastic change like brunette to blond do it over several days or weeks. It helps the elasticity and conditioning if the hair is given a break between chemical processes such as dyes or perms.

Straightening Curly Hair

Although the flat iron has been on the shelves in stores for quite some time the use of it is an art. One of the biggest secrets of getting curly hair straight is using the blow dryer first, a flat iron and then a silicone serum. Using a silicone serum is a way to prolong the straight hairstyle you're aiming for. Use it sparingly on the ends of your hair and try not to play or touch hair too much because it will cause frizz.

Changing Your Hairstyle

After having waist length hair for years you finally feel like it's time for a change and want something drastic but before jumping in head first do a little research. Check out magazines and style books your hair stylist may have on hand. Besides the old school methods for finding a hairstyle check out the "virtual salons" available on the web. These virtual salons are easy to navigate and for the most part; free to use. Find the most recent picture of yourself (a head-shot is best) and upload it into the virtual salon. You can use one of the models that resemble you the most if you don't have a picture to upload.
