Styrofoam Cup

Taking Care of the Earth

April Higney
Passing along the highway,
watching the trees pass upon my view,
a saddened sight, a styrofoam cup,
someone too lazy to pick it up,
broken shards of glass glisten amongst the morning dew.

So maybe its something biodegradable,
maybe something that rain could wash away,
but its so much more than that,
for ones to be so careless,
scattering trash to the earth, where flowers should lay.

I stop along the roadside,
picking up the trash I see,
a small jackrabbit peers up through the bushes at me.
Now maybe I'm not perfect,
but I have a respect for the land,
cut fingers on the glass, but know the rabbit will run free.

Is our world getting so lazy,
so dependant upon others to do what is only right,
just expecting that tomorrow will cater to our every need,
as we cast out our rubbish upon the plants and animals,
defecating the grounds, we wish to grow upon, the food we wish to feed.

The earth absorbs, rain and anti-freeze,
and our days are spent, spending, tossing out the containers,
plastic packaging on the ground, an empty beer can, a discarded old shoe,
no thoughts in mind for the tragedy, future upon us it may bring,
still thinking that it will just disappear, that the rain will wash it away, and renew.

Life, the earth doesn't just work like that.
Man-made goods the earth cannot break down,
it cannot determine a styrofoam cup, laying upon the ground.
Life, the people, with knowledge it seems,
should know only cool clean water should be running down streams.
We can determine, the styrofoam cup, and not be so lazy, and just pick it up.
