Suave Professionals Extra Hold Styling Foam Review

Julie James
I wish I were one of those women whose hair would simply fall into a fashionable style at will, but I'm not. I must use product on my hair to whip it into submission. One product I decided to try to give my hair body and holding power is Suave Extra Hold Styling Foam.

I chose this particular mousse as it is part of Suave's Professionals Line, which is designed to perform as well as brands typically available at salons only. The manufacturer claims this product holds as well as Sebastian Shaper Full-On Body Mousse, is for those who have hair that "needs body and control", and offers "all day hold".

To use, I shake the bottle a few times, then depress the dispenser and place a dollop of styling foam into my hand. This product is very white and fluffy, so I carefully rub my hands together and lightly dab the foam onto my hair for even distribution, then comb it through my hair to make sure I've got the product all throughout my hair.

Usually letting my hair air dry before styling so as to prevent damage, I need to blowdry when using Suave Professionals Extra Hold Styling Foam as it takes a long time to air dry. Immediately after blowdrying, my hair feels very slightly crunchy, but I'm able to get rid of that feeling easily by running a brush through my hair. Combing my hair after using this product is very easy, and doesn't result in snags and snarles. I finish styling, and go about my day.

My hair is very hard to hold into place, but this product did a very nice job. My hair wasn't stiff, nor did the product flake. My hair simply stayed nicely in place. I also got a good deal of volume in my short, fine hair using this. Even using a flatiron to create a few flips in my messy/spiky style was much easier after drying this into my hair, and I didn't have to use hairspray to hold the flips all day.

I do have one problem with this product...the scent. This product smells like a men's cologne to me. The scent is in no way offensive, but as a woman, I don't care for the scent on me. I had hoped the scent would fade, and though it does to a certain degree, I can still smell this in my hair at the end of the day. I normally wear some sort of body splash or perfume, so I can mostly mask the scent of this product if needed, but I'd rather feel as if I have a choice of wearing another scent. If I add a few light sprays of an unscented hair spray over this product, I can nearly eliminate the masculine scent.

Washing this product out of my hair was easy, and I didn't find that I needed to use more shampoo than normal to effectively remove the product.

Overall, I find Suave Extra Hold Styling Foam to be a good performer, and I like not having to spend the larger amount of money on a salon brand. Save a few dollars and give this product a try.
