For the month of February 2011, the activities on my Montessori Practical Life shelf took on a red, pink, and purple theme.

The Montessori Geometric Cabinet is part of the Montessori sensorial curriculum. Each tray teaches children about a different set of two-dimensional plane shapes. There are six drawers, and one intro tray.

The sixth tray in the Montessori Geometric Cabinet holds irregular curved shapes. These shapes are not seen as frequently in the child's environment, which makes them even more interesting.

The tray with irregular straight shapes is the fifth drawer in the Montessori geometric cabinet. All of these shapes are two-dimensional, known as plane shapes. Children learn these by tracing the contours with their fingers.

The polygon tray is the fourth tray in the Montessori geometric cabinet in the Montessori Sensorial area.

The triangle tray is the third tray in the Montessori geometric cabinet. Each triangle has a special name, first indicated by its angle, then by its lines/sides.

The geometric cabinet in the Montessori sensorial curriculum teaches children about plane shapes. They trace the contours of the shapes to gain a true understanding of those lines and angles. This intro tray precedes the rest of the cabinet.

Strengthen fine motor skills by using these ideas for practical life tonging exercises at Christmas. The theme was red, green, and white in 2010.
