Born in Minneapolis, MN and raised on a beef and cash crop farm. I was the oldest of six children and attended a one-room schoolhouse with children in grades one through six. I never attended kindergarten because it was not available. My parents married when they were teenagers and eloped to Iowa because my Mother was pregnant with me when she was 19 years old and my Dad was 17. Raised Catholic and was baptized and confirmed in that faith. I played French Horn from seventh through 12th grade and sang in the high school choir. I attended an all girls Catholic college as a freshman and lived with my maternal grandmother and commuted to school ( she was the adoptive mother to my mother who learned the identity of her real mother when she was in her 20's and revealed the truth to me when I was about 15). Our family visited my mother's birth mother on a few occasions but we were unable to know anything about her birth father. I transferred to the University of Minnesota where I graduated with a major in social science and a B.A. degree. I was hit by a drunk driver while riding a bicycle during my senior year of college and did not graduate for another four months while attending classes on crutches due to a broken ankle. I travelled to Europe when I was 20 and spent six weeks with my maternal grandmother's relatives in Germany. I continued to travel as a young adult and often visited my cousin who lived on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City. I spent many trips visiting museums, attending Broadway shows, shopping and eating international foods long before it was popular to do so in the Midwest. I married at age 36 and moved to Boston with my husband where we lived for six years. My only child, a daughter was born in Concord, home of many of the greatest early American writers and Walden Pond.
