  • Val Tobin
Val Tobin has worked in the tech industry for ten years as a software/web developer while exploring her interests in the occult, paranormal and spirituality fields on the side. In 2004, she wrote for the online publication Community MX. Val started writing for Suite 101 in May 2010. Val started Serenity Now Gifts & Services as a part-time home based business with her husband in 2005. They offer such holistic services as Reiki, Crystal Therapy and Angel Therapy Practitioner® sessions. Val's interest in the paranormal has also led her to doing paranormal investigations at a variety of locations throughout Ontario and the States. Another interest is health and nutrition, which Val has been studying both formally and informally for the last 27 years. To help people with their physical well-being, Val does cleanse coaching with people who want to remove impurities and flush excess fat from their bodies using the Isagenix® system of cleansing and fat burning products. Val traveled to Kona, Hawaii three times between March 2008 and April 2010 to receive training from Doreen Virtue. She achieved her Angel Therapy Pracitioner® with advanced certification in October of 2008, and recently received her Mediumship Certification when she attended Doreen's Mediumship Certification course in April 2010. Val contributed a story to Doreen Virtue's Hay House book Angel Words. Val enrolled in the Parapsychic Science Bachelor of Science program (now called "Alternate Spiritual Traditions") at the American Institute of Holistic Theology (AIHT) and received her degree in September 2010. Val and her writing were recognized in the Fall 2010 AIHT newsletter. Val conducts workshops on angels, faeries, opening the third eye and more, primarily from Cherry Valley Retreat in Newmarket, Ontario and The Hedge Witch in Sharon, Ontario.

Hey, I'm far from complicated as people go. I have lots of things I want to do, but lack the motivation to do them, or loose interest in them far to quickly for them to go anywhere. I'm poor as fuck, but not finding it as difficult as you might've thought. I'm shy around 98% of people, unless you get some wine down me . . . and some shots . . . cheep vodka . . . more wine, black Russian and guiness, Jack Daniels and coke, more vodka, and then I'm pretty much ready to be your best friend! I like to think I'd love to live in the country ((My idea of the country: Trees, flowers, lush greenery, faeries, home made bread. The reality of the country: Bugs, rain, mud, wet, hard graft, bugs, cold, bugs, weird accents, bugs)) So I'm going to live in the city forever. I don't suck my thumb! . . . I chew it.

A life-long dabbler in the arts, I was born and raised in small town not far from the beautiful Hocking Hills, in Appalachian Ohio. I have done considerable world-traveling as an adult, and spent significant time living in the Middle East with my Saudi husband before finally returning home where in concert with like-minded locals, we have devoted ourselves to working with the Friends of the Herbert Wescoat Memorial Library and its performance wing, The Friends' Community Players/Rough Magic (Shakespearean troupe). It has also been my pleasure to have a hand in the creation of a quaint annual Faerie Fest, and to found and direct the Middle Eastern fusion dance troupe Whiplash. I also create safe, painless, temporary body art as The Henna Faerie. My husband and I are passionate about the arts, and our four beautiful children are actors, singers, dancers and artists. It has been challenging and exciting to have a hand in the creation and perpetuation of family-friendly and affordable events and entertainment in an area not normally thought to be culturally or artistically alive, and to prove that if even a small group of people work together in a creative way, they can make a difference, and have truly positive impact in their own communities. I am proud of the work we do, and enthused about continuing to find ways to prove that small-town life needn't be dull!

I was born and have lived in the same place since that fateful day. I enjoy a number of things, and writing is obviously one of them. I can write on a whim, and if I do say so, can write something completely and utterly awesome.
