I am a 64 year old man with a wide variety of professional and life experiences. I'm divorced after an 18 year marriage and have 2 grown children. I've lived throughout the US, in TX, PA, GA, ILL, VA, SD, NM, and OK. I worked for the US government 1972-93 as an intelligence analyst, researching and writing on defense topics. Later, I have worked as an author, editor, substitute teacher, engineering technician, and holistic healer. I have been doing energy healing work since 1990. I had polio at age 6 and have been living and working a relatively normal life from a wheelchair since 1953. I have been living independently since I went to college in 1965. I have a broad range of skills including technical writing, energy healing, intuitive, general engineering, geology, drawing, painting, drafting, teaching, and others. I try to integrate my knowledge in many fields to create new knowledge.

Writing calms me, makes me happy and gives me feelings of accomplishment, self-satisfaction and pride. Growing up, my father continually reminded me: “Mike, the more interests you have, the more interesting you will be.” How right my father was. Thanks Dad! I have more interests in my life than I have time. I do not consider myself a “subject matter expert” on any particular issue. I do, however, consider myself competent in areas where I have developed interest. A famous author once said: “Scientists are dreamers and engineers are doers.” Though not degreed, I feel I maintain both qualities. I spent many years working toward a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology. I am substantially educated. I maintain interest in the core sciences and enjoy conceiving, designing and building products of my imagination. But, my primary pursuit is writing about the things I dream about doing. My first novel is in progress; simultaneously I am developing a non-fiction piece whose working title is “Great Ideas.” I am working to bring my first-ever website on line. My experience comes from the old-style print media; I continue to educate myself on the new-age electronic media. Night and day would be my best analogy of those two related, but completely different industries. Additionally, for Yahoo! Voices, I am currently authoring a series of articles, as follows: A Series on America's Greatest Trees. A Series on America's Greatest Small Trees. A Series on America's Greatest Bushes. A Series on America's Greatest Vines. A Series on Americas Greatest Ground Cover. A Series on Americas Greatest Grasses. It's a plate full, but as I love to say: "You will never loose unless you quit!" I'm not quitting ... any time soon.

It is enormously difficult but fun to do a writing resume at age 58. To make the long story as brief as possible, I didn't start buckling down until 1980, ten years after my high school graduation, when I went to college with no burning goal other than to start a journey. By 1985, I had an associate's degree in forestry and just about all the undergraduate courses necessary for a bachelor's in geology, but I just wasn't ready for geochemistry then and the financial aid ran out. It was a difficult time. After bailing out of college and starting work in Albany with Kelly Services, I still wanted something more and so began to travel through America, working with Kelly Services until no temp jobs were available and I got a receptionist job in New Mexico. Somewhere along the way, I discovered the wonders of basic English and found that I could type quickly, and because of my college experience, do basic research and handle technical terms easily. Medical transcription called, and I ended up in an entry-level position with a small company in San Francisco, later on coming back East, where I have been ever since. Now writing calls. While I did sell a few freelance science articles to local newspapers back in the 1980s, it is a whole new world now, and there is much to learn. The Yahoo Contributor Network is a wonderful place to break in and share my love of the craft with others.

I am a full-time jewelry artist who wants to be a better writer; mostly so I can take this show on the road. I'd like to be able to work from anywhere in the world. My interest in writing has been developing since I was an undergrad at LSU. Instead of creative writing, I entered the Geology department and my life was taken over. I don't regret the decision at all, but the types of jobs I can get really do not appeal to me. So, here I am; the Accidental Artist! I was working in a lab and just hated the position. The managers did not treat the lab workers with the respect they deserved and I was not interested in being a part of that. I feel so free now! I miss the paycheck, greatly, but this freedom is incredible! So, yes, I'm interested in making money as a writer and a jewelry artist. That's who I am right now.

Most of my education is in the life sciences, including Zoology and Genetics. I do, however, have a passion for all of the sciences, with Geology and Statistics thrown in for good measure. I graduated Nursing school and have been an RN since 1991. My specialty areas were Geriatrics and Oncology. I also worked as a corporate nurse, conducted interviews, hired nursing personnel, taught CNA classes, and conducted staff in-services for health and safety. One of my most heartfelt passions is wildlife biology and conservation. I have successfully raised orphaned baby beavers, cottontail rabbits and various species of wild birds for release back into their natural habitat when possible. I love working with reptiles, keeping and breeding Chameleons (Veiled and Mellers), Desert Horned Lizards, and Bearded Dragons. When I have the time I build stained glass lamp shades, wedding and other special occasion cakes, and have been successful making and selling bridal bouquets and wedding arrangements and sets. I now work from home while studying business and marketing. Freelance writing is a wonderful outlet for my varied interests, and I have become proficient in SEO, though keeping up with the ever changing theories is a challenge. My story is a portrait of miracles. In 1987 I was bitten by a rabid Raccoon. I was told that I was the first person to survive Rabies since the 1800's. On June 1, 2009 I began treatment for Pancreatic Cancer. Once that was behind us my husband was diagnosed with Nasopharyngeal Cancer and began treatments on June 1, 2010. His is also a success story, with his last two PET scans being completely clear.
