  • Jennifer Gelpi
I am 34 years old. I am a former adolescent and child therapist. I am from upstate New York (think Canada). I am currently living in New York City. My second love, behind my beautiful husband Rick. When I was 19, I was diagnosed with PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome) and it has ravaged my life in many ways. Tremendous weight gain, infertility issues, unwanted "other" symptoms. I've had two weight loss surgeries. My heaviest weight was 310lbs. The first surgery, in 2003, was gastric bypass. It worked for awhile...then, well, it didn't. I gained the weight back and this past summer I had lapband surgery. So far so good. I think. I'm trying very hard to eat healthy and only when hungry and to stop when I'm full. So I'm sure you can imagine what my stomach must look like! What a mess! In 2008, I was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder. Being a social worker and a therapist and the daughter of a father with this illness... I was familiar with its demons. Hearing the diagnosis for the first time, sitting in the patient chair this time, was very difficult. I tried bargaining with my psychiatrist, Leon, that it wasn't that. It was just depression, it was just anxiety, it was just some impulse control issues, it was anything...but what it was. I was very much on the verge of trashing my whole life, I needed Leon to "fix" me. So, I took the drugs. And there have been a lot of drugs since to "tweak" this or that. My mind has been not my own, for what seems a very long time. I hope with this blog to discover the me I used to know, to help others, for others to help and teach me. I'm looking at this as a journey...there will be bends, sharp turns, yield signs and roads closed...but, in the end, it's not the end that matters, is it?

  • Daniel Leiter
I'm a native New Yorker and Licensed Tour Guide. I founded New York New York Tours www.nynytours.com because I realized that there was a tremendous number of people who wanted to come, see, and experience the city but were a little afraid and intimidated by the prospect of the adventure. They just didn't know in what part of the city they should stay where they would feel safe after dark and be within walking distance to the restaurants, shows and attractions. And they certainly didn't want to end up in a nasty hotel or in an out of the way part of town! They wanted to see the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, and the list goes on, but were unsure of just how to get to those places. They heard how expensive the city could be and didn't want their pocketbook mugged either. They needed someone to put together a all inclusive package that would take in a hotel in the best part of town, meals at nice restaurants, sightseeing, and attractions, including a means of getting around the city. They also wanted to know what the price would be before they left home. Further, they wanted someone knowledgeable in New York City to be there for them if they needed help with a problem or just advice. So the idea of a "sort of" Club Med for New York City was born. Included would be a mid priced hotel, full American breakfast to sustain our guests thru the day with only a quick bite on their own for lunch; sightseeing and attractions, and a way to get them to the various places easily and economically. Dinners at great restaurants and hit Broadway show in the evening would also be included.

I'm a former aspiring screenwriter who then went back to school with hopes of getting his PhD. That, unfortunately, didn't work out, so now I'm trying to figure out the next chapter of my life, and not having very much success doing it. I’m also an avid cineaste, a student of philosophy, a devotee of the humanities, a keen political observer, a semi-voracious bibliophile, a history buff, a literate fanboy, an articulate writer, and an eloquent scholar. I have a BFA in Screenwriting from the University of Southern California and an MA in Cinema Studies from New York University. (Naturally, all of this makes me completely unemployable in this economy.)
