  • Deborah Taylor-Hough
Freelance writer, public speaker, editor of The Simple Times newsletter, and author of several bestselling books including Frugal Living for Dummies® and the popular Frozen Assets cookbook series. Over two decades ago, our family bucked the tide of late-20th Century American life. We became a one income family in a two income world. We set out on a journey toward frugal living and simplicity that quickly became an education in itself—and a rewarding, joy-filled lifestyle. Through hard work and determination, our family paid off outstanding consumer debt and medical bills, radically reduced spending in every area of our lives, and most importantly, lived to tell about it! During those lean times, we learned creative ways to stretch our limited finances while not sacrificing our quality of life. I share my knowledge and expertise with thousands of people each year through in-person workshops, discussion groups, radio programs, television spots, and a variety of online resources.

My values are not what they once were nor my perceived needs. I'm working on simplicity in the middle of the caos I create behind my back. I'm living in the here now yet I ruminate on the both past and future. I am you. I am me. We are one.

I grew up on a 300 acre farm in the state of Arkansas. Living on a farm gave me a certain sense of grounding and simplicity that will always be a part of who I am. I loved it!! Especially the animals! At the age of twenty, I graduated from college. After only one month of teaching, my husband was drafted but decided to join the Marine Corps and go to Officer's Candidate School. In the next three-and-a-half years, we traveled as well as lived in various parts of the United States and the Orient. It was during this time that I caught the "traveling bug". After the three plus years in the Marine Corps, we went back to teaching and coaching. A few years later, my daughter and my son were born. Now, I have five and almost six grandchildren. All little miracles. I retired from education two years ago, but I still keep busy with a part time job. I would like to travel more, write more, and spend as much time with my family as I can.

My writing life is simple. In the morning I walk to the library to write. The library's the safest place in the city for me, not because I'm surrounded by books, but because it's so quiet. While there I have to meet one of three goals: first, write three-thousand, one hundred words. When I read that Norman Mailer put himself on a "three-thousand word-a-day diet" at the beginning of his career, and that Stephen King did as well, I decided to tack on another hundred for myself. I want to best my elders. Second, finish a long story or, third, begin and finish a short one. The latter is what I did this morning. The story was about a telemarketer who discovers his girlfriend is better than he thought she was. A simple idea. Not to sound pretentious, but there's a line from Shakespeare that has stuck with me. It's from Sonnet 66 and goes: "Tired with all these, for restful death I cry, / As to behold desert a beggar born -- And a simple truth miscall'd simplicity." Well, I feel the same way, and my writing reflects that preference for a simple, unadorned style, which doesn't shirk on meaningfulness.
