R. LeydenI am a mom of four & a wife of 1. In my younger years, I did a lot of freelance modeling until I started college. In college, my major was Criminal Justice until I decided I wanted to be a criminal profiler for the FBI so I changed my major to Forensic Psychology. Once I graduated I got an interview with the FBI and they told me I needed at least 3 yrs of law enforcement experience & that's when I began my career w/ the NYPD. In my years with NYPD, in addition to working street patrol, I taught Behavioral Science in the police academy to new incoming recruits. I was promoted to Sergeant and went back to street patrol. After many years w/ the NYPD I decided not to make a career change & stay put. Tragedy struck when during routine street patrol, my driver & I received calls for help from another police officer and upon arrival we saw a large group fighting in the street. While trying to pull a young girl out from under a crowd beating her, an unknown person(s) proceeded to spray my face with an unknown corrosive substance rendering me temporarily blind.I suffered from chemical burns to my face & eyes. I ultimately recovered but never to be the same again. About a year after the incident, I was placed as a late tour supervisor in the Evidence Collection Unit (a subdivision of the Crime Scene Unit). My injuries got the better of me & I was ultimately forced into retirement in 2009. Prior to this incident, I was enrolled in a local community college because I wanted to pursue a career in Nursing as well. It was during this time that my youngest son, Ryan was diagnosed with Autism. Because of the chaos & emotional turmoil of his diagnosis I was unable to re-register after I finished my last semester and thus began my fight against Autism. I started writing all my feelings down in a journal to document our experiences with the autism and that is how "My name is Ryan & I have Autism" was born. I decided to publish my book to help other parents experiencing autism for the
