Dr. O'BrienDr. Roderick Shields O'Brien is from Wisconsin, although he attended College at Notre Dame and Med School at Indiana University, so he considers himself at least part "Hoosier." He completed two residencies, also at IU, in Psychiatry and Neurology. He served in the US Air Force and was honorably discharged Major O'Brien. The combination of Neurology and Psychiatry backgrounds was a natural path to his current passion with dementia care. He is the Director of Care for the Colorado Springs branch of Homewatch CareGivers, in addition to overseeing all of their marketing, education, and licensing needs. Rod enjoys the change of perspective that his current responsibilities offer. When practicing Neurology in the military, time was short and there was a culture of medicating problems that could have been solved through more challenging and slower (but also more rewarding) means. Now he spends his time training employees, teaching, writing, and volunteering. He gives educational presentations frequently for the Alzheimer's Association and is dedicated to raising awareness of the growing epidemic of dementia and other elder care needs.

KATE MAVERI have devoted my life to building supportive communities of people through creative and spiritual expression. For many years I did this through my work as an ordained minister and chaplain. My work has brought me into close contact with those coping with illness, death and the pain of bereavement; it has made me a student of other cultures; and it has deepened my appreciation of what it means to live a healthy, vital life on a healthy, verdant planet. After moving on from ministry, I became a fundraiser and event planner in the remarkable field of hospice and palliative care. This work taught me amazing lessons about human generosity—and how to throw a wicked good party! While I often joke about “going out there and saving the world,” doing so isn’t really a joke for me. I believe that all of us have a role to play in making the world a better place for ourselves and for future generations. To that end, I do whatever I can to be—in the words of Patch Adams—“publicly happy.” That might mean waving you in front of me in line at the grocery store or blowing soap bubbles around your crying child as we wait to board a plane. Acts of public happiness have changed my life for the better. I believe a healthy, happy life involves a deep engagement with creativity and creative people. I am a regular at Chicago museums, galleries and theatre. I make prints, write, quilt, draw, paint and sew as often as I can. Another part of that life is a concern that my brothers and sisters on this planet get a fair shake in life, and that the planet itself is allowed to thrive. I have a deep concern for social justice and the environment. I express that concern through my paid work with an organic farm investment firm as well as my volunteer work as a health care activist. Having just passed the mid-century mark, I find myself more at peace than I’ve ever been, and I am very happy to humbly lend my perspective to this grand experiment we call life. Thanks for rea
