Steve WigginsI was born in a log cabin on a cold and snowy day in Texas City, Texas... Well maybe not if you know anything about Texas City. Still I was born to a wonderful family. Mom, Dad, Grandmothers, granddads, and a passel of other assorted relatives. My dad and my granddads are still my heroes. As I grew up in a rural setting I got to work, play, read and dream. After I got out into the work world, I have worked in R&D labs, offices, construction, oilfield, and assorted odd jobs. I have worked for two of the biggest corporations in the world, mediums size companies, small companies, and for myself. I married a wonderful woman who had two son and we had a beautiful daughter. Unfortunately we have been separated for 11 years now. As much or more my bad as hers. My friends number few, but stand tall as human beings. The type you know you can trust. Life has been good and bad and I thank the Lord for all my blessings and the bad times that make me strong. Maybe I'll write all this in detail some day.

kbLikelyBorn in Bakersfield, California in 1948, my family and I, moved to Oregon where my Dad worked and built a house. A new job for him with better pay led us back to California. I stayed as an adult - working, marrying & having my children. I was a proud member of the California Army National Guard Reserves for over 20 years and I spent almost 7 years active Army in one form or another and I served in the 1st Desert Storm - I loved those years and they have many special memories for me. To sum those years up - the great, the bad and the Oh God did I really live through that years. Between being a mom of two and a Grandmother of 5, I like the Grandmother role the best - all you moms out there it will get it easy eventually and all you Grandmothers that are raising your grandchildren - there is a light at the end of the tunnel and I'm holding it for you. I have been a small business owner, a jack of all trades and a specialist in a few, a teamster and a scab driver. I've been kicked in the teeth more than once, you just pick them up and keep on going. Never let life get you done to the point where you can't get back up again. Life like that wouldn't be worth living. I've been hurt and caused hurt. I've been loved and given love. I have helped and been helped. I have dreamed of hitting it big and haven't. I am basically a home grown person, a person who believes men can be friends without having to sleep with them. I believe women can get along even if they are both in the kitchen together. I also believe children are basically good and society and not just the parents dictate how they turn out. Sometimes it is not a matter of blood lines but of the social experience that helps or hinders our youth. I love animals and hate it when they are mistreated and abused. I know what I think should be done to the abuser. But, our legal system more geared to the abuser than to the victim. We, as a society still have a lot of growing to do.
Ray BearfieldRay Bearfield was a magazine editor and fishing guide in Southwest Florida, and brings a distinctly coastal flair to his cooking. He finds inspiration in the native dishes of the Caribbean, and in the memories of his grandmothers' cooking. One was part of an extended Italian family that owned restaurants throughout the Midwest. The other was a "pioneer woman" who raised 14 children on a farm in the Smoky Mountains in East Tennessee. He couples that inspiration with a dedication to showing that cooking from scratch is not only better for people and the planet, but is easier than most people realize.
