Paula LovellA native Texan, I have always written for pleasure and as part of my job. I come from a family of educators and was a middle and high school science teacher for 9 years. After starting out as a volunteer when I was teaching, for two years I was the Program Coordinator for WorldFest, a ten day film festival in Houston. One year I programmed 150 short films and the other year I programmed 92 independent feature films from 24 countries, writing the promotional material for the program book and the local press. Since then I've been in the business world writing brochures, handbooks, proposals and reports, and in my spare time writing journals, screenplays, blogs and a little haiku.
ThatWordChickHi there! I'm Delany, aka "ThatWordChick". I've always been in love with the written word, devouring books whole from a very young age. I enjoy quirky humor, a la Dave Barry, and have been known to pen odd haiku odes to breakfast cereals and skee ball and wrestling with strange genres like 55 Fiction to challenge my brain. Creatively, I like to think of myself as the oil-streak-faced mechanic in the belly of a starship, frantically welding things together with solder made from chewing gum and pen caps in a last ditch effort to save an intergalactic mission. I find this more motivating than deadlines on a calendar, and heck...half the fun of being a writer is being slightly unhinged from reality, in my opinion. I can and will write about almost anything, with a portfolio that spans from adult novelties (my niche, actually - long, weird story about how THAT happened) to wine bottle gift baskets. My work has been in some D-list magazines, a handful of major retail sites, catalogs and here and there around the internet.

I am a semi-amateur photographer and love landscape photography. I have an Masters in Business Administration and am currently working on my Masters in history part-time. I have five children total including four girls and one boy, all grown and out of school.
Steve BeardenI am the oldest of three, I have two younger sisters. This is not meant to be a sob story, just a history that I am proud to say is my own. My father was an alcoholic so my mother divorced him when I was three. We had a mixed relationship for many years. During high school he was arrested, I didn't talk to him for a year. The day I decided to drive by and break the silence I found him dead on his kitchen floor from a massive heart attack, just like his father (my grandfather). I give him credit for being a good man at heart. My mother worked tirelessly to provide for her three children. I remember waking up at night hearing her cry over bills she could not afford. With the help of family and good friends we were able to remain happy and thrive as a family. I cannot say enough about my mother. My step father is a great man. He has always supported and loved us. I admire his patience and good nature. He is always willing to lend a hand to someone in need, a quality that seems to be disappearing. He works hard and has a very caring heart. During high school I tried writing poetry and found it very rewarding. I don't follow any specific poetry formats (i.e. Haiku, Limerick, etc). I like getting my thoughts down in what I consider a creative way. I like imagery. I sometimes will look at something or listen to something and attempt to apply words to it. I like to help people who need help, if I can. My music tastes have changed over time but I currently like anything from Andy Mckee to Metallica. I have four cats. I met my wife in high school. She helped me through some of the hardest experiences in my life, so far. We had very little in common but were drawn to each other. We grew very close over the years. We both attended the same college together. We got married September 2008 and are expecting our first child this December 2010. I consider her my guide in life and someone who will always be engrained in my soul.
Joy DeVitoEver since I can remember, I have had a fascination and love for the written word, never without my precious journal close at hand. Whether it be a Haiku expressing my thoughts or feelings of the moment, or a short story pulled from the farthest reaches of my imagination, I was never at a loss for words. Having been born and raised in a tiny town in Southern Germany, I was afforded a unique perspective on life. As I grew I took every opportunity to travel, seeing most of Europe before the age of 13 and of course returning to my favorite countries as an adult. When I was 13 my parents moved to the US, precisely Southern California, where I would remain until I married. During my time in California, I dove into several hobbies head on: painting, cooking, fashion design, gardening and of course honing my writing skills. I married a head strong Jersey Boy, was married for 18 years raising 4 beautiful children, and have been divorced for 12 years. During my marriage we all moved back to Germany for 6 years, where I went to the University of Maryland (Heidelberg Satellite Campus) and obtained 2 BA's, one in Early Childhood Development and one Social Anthropology. I also received a Culinary arts degree from the Coquus Escuela de Cocina, Barcelona, Spain. With these tools, I have done everything from teach kindergarten, to be a mommy , and even a chef at a mediocre restaurant, all the while writing, writing, writing. I have been published several times and look forward to expanding my portfolio and becoming a full time writer.
Ed ManualWhile an undergraduate, I taught swimming and lifesaving, performed onstage several times in community theater, and worked as a youth supervisor for the state correctional system in Illinois. After graduation I published a booklet of poems, SPRING HAIKU, and a local newspaper produced a feature story on my work, leading me to give poetry readings in the area. Now living in California, I have taken formal training in acting here, and published another book in 2008, ROAD POEMS AND SKY HAIKU. There is more background info and a preview of the poems at www.roadpoems.com. All of my poems on YCN are new work (or previously unpublished) and are not in the book. I have posted a short video of myself reciting poems from the book at www.youtube.com/mrdragonfly101.
