I was born the oldest of eight children and grew up in the Portland, OR area. After high school and college, I went to work as a secretary and eventually managed to get into computers. I took classes in PERL, and started writing applications to help increase my work productivity and eventually worked into Web Site Programming. Today I work with Teens dealing with homelessness and with a Transitional Living Program. My leisure time has always revolved around vegetable gardening, canning, cooking and sewing. I've won many blue ribbons for my cooking skills and for my sewing projects. I used to grow a 160'x100' vegetable garden every year, today I am content with container gardening.

  • Stuart Sorensen
Hi, I’m Stuart. I qualified as a mental health nurse in the UK in 1995. These days I’m trainer in mental health and/or social care related topics. My clinical experience has covered various aspects of mental health and social care with a variety of populations. However my main interests are in working with people diagnosed with schizophrenia or other psychotic states, personality disorder and those who harm themselves. I believe that it is never enough to simply write people off as ‘difficult’, ‘unco-operative’ or ‘manipulative’ and much of my training relates to helping workers to find effective ways to engage and work with people who have complex needs. As well as mental health-related interests I have a passion for helping workers in all areas of health and social care to find the balance between fulfilling their duty of care and at the same time respecting the service-user’s right to take risks and to determine their own life choices. This isn’t quite so difficult a balance to strike as many people seem to think but it does require a little thought on occasion. I didn’t always intend to be a nurse. As a boy and young man I really intended to be an actor and director. However I quickly learned that I wasn’t good enough. A succession of low paid jobs to fund my theatrical dreams as well as a couple of stints of homelessness led me to realise that whatever the ‘X’ factor might be – I certainly didn’t have it. So I began considering three different alternatives. One was salesmanship – but that wasn’t really for me. Another was a career in the church but again it wasn’t really the career for me and the other option was social and health care. I got a job in the hostel I lived in and that led me into a succession of care assistant jobs until eventually I applied for and began my nurse training in 1992.

From 2007 to 2010, I spent three years dealing with individuals suffering from: schizophrenia, severe religious issues; substance abuse and homelessness, emotional detachment, and cutting, plus 18 months as of an active peer support community with San Francisco Lighthouse Church Celebrate Recovery. During this time, I have participated in assisting in providing positive supervised interactions between shut-ins and surrounding community members, assist individuals in recovery to engage in community events, and overcome various phobias; while acting as a peer advocate and learning to develop effective community, provider/client relationships and alliances. Thus; I have real life experience as a MHSA peer advocate/survivor.

Born first into a family of 8 children, I've had a relatively short life filled to the brim with myriad defining events. From spectacularly grandiose trips to foreign countries and award-winning athletic ability, to homelessness and the painfully tragic death of my father, I have had a wide breadth of human experiences. My husband and I have been married since 2002, and since 2004, share the great and noble responsibility of raising our four daughters to live up to their potential. In the last few years, I've also started a small business in Cake Artistry, with many hours of research, trial and experience to go along with that.
