Dee GallagherIn my early years, I was the working, single mother of five. At this time, I am a working, single grandmother of six. Until three years ago, I was satisfied with a 20+ year career and very strong family relationships. I started writing to relieve the frustration acquired from exposure to the insanity served up by our Family Court Judicial System.
Laura Wooster BaldwinAs I entered my 30s I definitely knew that life wasn t what I had expected it to be when I was younger, in the positive and negative sense. I married a wonderful man, had a great career, but was beginning to wonder at what cost the professional success was achieved. Was all of the stress, anxiety, long hours and loss of any semblance of a work-life balance worth it? With working so hard and making good money, why were we still living paycheck to paycheck? And why didn t anyone ever tell me that even a strong marriage was a LOT of hard work? Where was my happily ever after? Those concerns sound trivial after the most significant blow occurred in late 2009 when my younger brother killed himself at age 32. From that moment on I had life before his death, and life after his death. It not only put a lot of things into perspective but also shook me at the core of my being. In the blink of an eye, I unexpectedly became an only child who was forced to deal with family issues that I was completely unprepared to manage; I had to serve as an information and support system to his friends when I desperately needed a shoulder of my own; but most importantly I had (have?) no idea how to take care of myself or deal with the stress, anxiety and mind-numbing sadness and grief that accompanies something such as a suicide. All of this compiled has taken (and is taking) its toll on my physical, mental and emotional health. For better or worse, I am a different person on a different journey today than I was before that moment when I learned what had happened. So, where do I go from here? How do I make sense of the insanity and learn how to take care of myself while at the same time becoming a better person, wife, daughter, and friend? Even outside of the tragedy, how can I once again capture joy and re-define my happily ever after so that it is not only achievable, but also fulfilling? I definitely know that I am not alone on this kind of journey, be it by choice or circumstance.
Megan EnglandMegan holds a bachelor's and master's degree in computer music composition from Stetson University and the University of Virginia. She succumbs to all things nerdy, from books to video games, tabletop RPGs to sci-fi/fantasy. Due to insanity, she is currently pursuing a second master's degree in Library Science at UNC.
Darcy RusselI'm a twenty-one years old and female. I'm a single child with a sister I adopted myself and step-siblings I don't particularly know. For most of my life I've been obsessed with dogs (of which I now have one, an amazingly lazy Jack Russell Mix, yes, I am well aware of the insanity in that). I've grown up half in the mid-west and half in the south and I frankly identify more as a southerner most days. I'm also decently liberal, barring a few random issues, and have a complete belief in the powers of humans as humans. As for my writing...well, I'm more of a creative writer. I'm new to even the idea of writing articles, but I do try my best to write things that are engaging.
Nathaniel Shaw, artist bebopMy Stop Messege If more under the power and insanity of addiction could stop long enouh to focus on the beginning of a fresh new day without the plague of a bottle of wine, a ballon/spoon/and its outfit, a hit and its accompanying class pipe or anything that must be injested in some way to relieve the pressure and pain felt by addiction. If such could stop long enough to watch the sun rise and endure its soothing warmth and tremendous energy instead of what has become a pest in the sky burning and getting in the way of a beautiful day that can never be seen.
Trevor BoydWhat can I say? I'm a university grad who fell in love with the dream to write. I love philosophy, psychology, and talking about the littlest of things for hours. I feel twangs of insanity, I slip into spaces in my unreality, but, I can't help feeling.
