MY FRIENDS

elinor, a small girl with big dreams. 24 years ago i was born in sweden. i played with mum and dad like everyone else, i played with my friends like everyone else and i went to school like everyone else. year 2006 i gradauted my three years of music highschool, where i practiced singing and playing the piano. then i did something crazy. me and my best fried at that time said -let's go somewhere! two days after we were on one week vacation in malta. back in sweden in my little home town i felt there was so much more i wanted to do with my life than meet a boy, marry him, buy a house, buy a volvo, buy a dog and then settle down with kids. one month later i travelled alone back to malta, with a turn and return ticket in my pocket. the return one i never used. i've been living here ever since. im going on my fifth year as a swedish girl living in malta. i do love my family in sweden, but i do love malta too. from my first day here i've been working in the catering business. in the beginning, to know what life really feels like, i started working in a night club, wich is not too healthy in the long run, so now ive been nearly four years working mornings in a wellknown restaurant. im happy, i live day by day and im exiting for what the future will give me.

I guess in the world of online writers, I’m probably among the oldest, since I was born in 1958. So, I’m in the company of those who have hopefully accumulated some wisdom anyone might appreciate: then again, maybe not. We’re living in an age when almost everybody wants to be young forever. Check out the commercials on tv and you’ll see what I mean: Viagra, sprays for bald spots, crazy stuff like that. I think we Americans have been like this for a long time, always searching for the Holy Grail. I’m just not in that mold, so my friends, you’ll have to decide for yourselves if you’d like to hear from an oldie, but a goodie. I’ve always wanted to be a writer, even way back when I went to Girl Scout summer camp and worked as one of the two Camp Reporters. It was a great honor, and we earned a patch! Many years later, but still long ago, back in the 1980’s to give you an idea, I wrote and published my own children’s books. I also wrote a few articles for some of the little newspapers springing up around town back then. I remember taking the first dollar I earned, putting it in a frame, and hanging it proudly on my wall. It was a great moment. It was a bummer when I had to open the frame a few years later to spend the dollar. What a pity it is that writers earn so little. My children’s books were, and are aimed to help very young babies and toddlers develop the skills they will use later to read, much like government programs like Head Start do. I’m not sure if it still exists, but you get the idea. I knew what I was doing because of the 10 years I’d spent teaching preschool and 2nd grade, so I was certain I could get them published at a good profit. This was long before, mind you, anyone down here heard of Steve Jobs and the internet. Back then, I had to beg New York City editors to take a chance on my books, and they didn’t know me from a hole in the wall. (Which was, as far as they were concerned, where I live
