  • Sloane Spencer
If someone can be destined to love live music, Sloane Spencer inherits that DNA; her parents’ first date was to hear Janis Joplin play the Fillmore East. Sloane melds her decade of professional expertise in commercial rock and country radio with her lifelong love of live music. From her first show at Atlanta’s former Omni Arena hearing John Denver in the round (as a preschooler—she fell asleep!), sneaking out of the house and catching a taxi before she could drive to hear REM play at 688 near Georgia Tech, going on a childhood family vacation to hear the Rolling Stones in London, England, to a double bill of Vic Chesnutt and the Chickasaw Mudd Puppies at the Cotton Club (where she inadvertently sat with Michael Stipe), intimate venues such as Winooski, Vermont’s original Higher Ground nightclub for Trey Anastasio and friends, to Bama Jam, Sloane loves live shows. Sloane’s ability to share her appreciation of music eases the conversations with songwriters and musicians, and elicits a friendly, personable interview, free from the metaphorical superiority of many music interview formats.

  • Abdul W. Hakim
Abdul W. Hakim, a long-time community servant who started organizing in the community at age 2O developing and coordinating youth activities and programs to help instill a sense of purpose and mission in our youth, challenging them to contribute to their communities. Abdul began to organize on behalf of community issues in the late 80s when a local Park was drug-infested with no facility granting youth an alternative. While going door-to door signing neighborhood kids up for a youth club he founded, We Are The Chosen, parents expressed despair over not being able to bring their children to the local park playground because of the drug and loitering problem. Abdul organized a group of parents and went to the Village Hall to protest the conditions there. Being asked to be the spokesperson, Abdul presented a plan to remedy the situation. This effort resulted in dramatic changes at the Park over the ensuing years that lasts until today. Established as a community activist and organizer, as well as being ordained and appointed the community liaison minister of his local church, Abdul began to see the need to work with and organize on behalf of various political campaigns over the years to bring about needed change, eventually making him into a successful political organizer. Abdul organized and led successful issue campaigns over the years including winning the demolition of a building that housed an illegal nightclub, and a store that sold alcohol to minors to get the village to build affordable housing in it's place. In 1993, Abdul helped organize a city-wide protest in Richmond, Va. and became the spokesperson causing the City of Richmond to reverse it's decision to eliminate Sunday Bus services. Abdul has organized and sat on numerous community boards, as well as worked with state and national organizations interested in positive change. Involved in many community and political activities throughout the years, Abdul maintained his passion f

  • Robert James Taylor
I was born in 1975, in the grounds of Cliveden House, Buckinghamshire where, fourteen years earlier Duke of Argyll introduced MP John Profumo to one Christine Keeler. During my early years I developed an interest in music, which developed into a profound passion. Although I don't play any conventional instruments, I had two hip-hop tracks released in 1993 and 1994 while studying for a diploma in sound engineering and production at City College Manchester. In 1995, while unemployed and dividing my time between helping out in the studio and hosting a pirate radio show from a flat in Manchester's notorious Moss Side, I received a phone call from the equally notorious (and world-famous) Hacienda nightclub. They needed a young, freshly-qualified and, above all, cheap sound man. I took the job. Two years and a million lost memories later, the Hacienda went into administration. I am the one and only individual who holds the dubious honour of being the last person ever to switch the place off. (Not that I knew it at the time, as I was only told about the closure when I arrived for work the following Monday. To me, June 28th 1997 had been just another Saturday night.) Later the same year, I began my television career as a trainee at NBC Europe in London. Three years later, in 2000, I became a studio director at CNBC Europe. In 2003 I left my directing job to travel and to write. I spent a year away in South East Asia, Australia and Europe, during which time I crossed countless borders, photographed, wrote, jumped off cliffs, ate scorpion, grasshopper, jellyfish and snake, fired guns, deejayed, fell in love, single-handedly survived a kidnap attempt and worked as a masseur in Sydney. Since my return to the UK in late 2004, I have worked as a freelance media professional. Find out more about my work at RJTmedia.com, or follow my personal blog at RealRobTaylor.com
