I have been a minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) since 1993. I helped start a non-profit Center for Youth that addresses root causes of poverty, and served as an Associate Minister at a growing congregation for 13 years. I am now the Senior Minister of a wonderful United Church of Christ congregation. Over the last 15 years, I have started several Christian record labels, most of which has specialized in reissues of out of print releases. I have two amazing children, ages 9 and 14. I am also an adjunct professor for Culver-Stockton College where I teach a Monday night Ethics class. I am a miracle worker (ok, just kidding)!

  • Scott McLaughlin
“Don’t talk about politics or religion in polite company.” The old adage doesn’t apply to Dr. Scott McLaughlin, who can provide a unique, global perspective on both topics. For the past twelve years, McLaughlin served as the leader of a 1.5 million member Christian denomination, with churches stretching from North and South America to Asia. A frequent visitor to Europe and Africa, McLaughlin offers insight on the birth of new religious movements, the aggressive growth and impact of Islam in Africa, and the decline of Christianity in the West. McLaughlin also served as President and Chancellor of the denomination’s theological seminary, and is familiar with new learning methods that are currently challenging the approach of traditional educational systems. As religious belief and political action become more closely intertwined both at home and abroad, McLaughlin delivers astute content and commentary based upon distinctive political experience. A former political consultant for U.S. Representative Howard Coble (R-NC), former U.S. Senator James Broyhill (R-NC), and former U.S. Senator Robert Dole (R-KS), McLaughlin was the nominee of the Libertarian Party for Governor of North Carolina in 1992, garnering the most votes as a third-party candidate in the state’s history for that office. Subsequently, as state Libertarian Party Chair, McLaughlin initiated civil-rights legal action in federal court to challenge North Carolina’s restrictive ballot access laws, and was instrumental in the repeal of North Carolina’s sales tax on food and prescription medicines. McLaughlin believes in the power of local communities to transform lives, eliminate poverty, and empower citizens. He served as Board Chair of his local Head Start advisory board, and currently serves as Board Chair for his local Community Action agency. McLaughlin has been a guest editorial writer for the Greensboro News and Record, focusing on political reform, and the host of The Winner’s Cir

The dichotomy of my life starts with my parents. My mother was the daughter of English professors and my father came from my uneducated, farm bred grandparents. I was born in a rural township called Lerna, Illinois. I grew up experiencing extreme poverty, country living, and Charismatic Christianity, which included faith healings and demon casting. After my parents' divorce and mother's remarriage, I moved to Florida, went to Catholic school, and was raised by an abusive stepfather. Though my biological father had no money, somehow he was able to pay for me to have voice lessons when I was 11, so that I could sing in church. My interest in music continued through high school where I attended a specialty school for gifted and talented students. My daily life consisted of lessons in music for 3 hours per day and academics for the rest. Also, throughout this time I decided that I wanted to be a vegetarian (age 13-26). Since my parents didn't desire to accommodate my dietary style, my mom bought me a cookbook and I began to make all of my own meals. I became well versed in cooking, health, organic food, and vegetarianism. By the time I got to college, I knew I didn't want music to be my career path and I failed my math and science classes, so I knew I also wasn't cut out to be a doctor. After floundering around a bit in interesting courses like literature, Spanish language, and Anthropology, I decided to get a virtually worthless, but fascinating degree in anthropology. During this time I was still a vegetarian and had also become interested in growing my own produce, so I studied that as much as possible. It is an art in Florida. When I graduated with my Anthropology degree, I got a job teaching reading to elementary students. I observed children with emotional and behavioral disturbances and thought that I might be able to work with them. So, I pursued my Master's Degree in Exceptional Student Education. While in graduate school, I took a full time tea

I am a professional woman, an educator, a single-mother, and an artist at heart. I raised four daughters as a single mother while continuing my education to become a teacher. I graduated Suma Cum Laude from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and began my teaching career at a Title I elementary school. I soon realized that teaching was truly a very important job, especially when the majority of my students were minority, second language learners, and living in poverty conditions. I developed a passion for insuring that my students and any others that I could reach would receive the very best education possible. I wanted to give them the education they would need to be able to have a successful future. I continued my education and received my Masters in Educational Leadership, eventually becoming an Assistant Principal, and today, an Elementary School Principal. I had the opportunity to open a brand new school where students learn in single-gender classes. It has been a wonderful experience and the students are thriving. As a Principal today, I face an array of educational issues daily. As a mother, I face parenting issues daily. As a woman, I face societal and human issues daily. My very busy world encompasses many, many topics that would be of certain interest to a varied audience and I hope to share much of it here. I also hope to share my artistic side, through photography, which I have picked up as a hobby, as I capture the natural beauty that surrounds us in the most likely and unlikely places.
