  • C.L. King
An award winning freelance writer, photographer, and educator, I have published over 300 articles since 2008 and assisted authors in bringing five books to publication in the past 24 months. I have been freelancing full time since 2005, working primarily in the fields of marketing media writing and architectural photography, as well as personal and business profiles, press releases and regional event coverage. I also teach writing at a community college, where I share with them a sadly joyful discovery I have made since writing professionally. The sad discovery I share with my writing students is that writing is not “All about them” or “self expression”, as they have mostly been taught. The joyful discovery is the same: that writing is not all about them. It is, instead, about something much greater: good writing is about having something to say that needs to be said, for one reason or another. Everything written should improve the life of your reader, I teach them, whether through humor or inspiration, or just important information. Otherwise, why ask for the reader’s time? My personal favorite stories to write are the turning points in people’s lives; everybody has them. These are the true stories of everyday courage in the face of personal adversity. Stories of personal triumph over adversity throw logs on the fires of hope when times are tough. I discovered the power of this at a time when my own life had fallen apart. I was serendipitously assigned to interview and profile over 200 “award winners” over a 12 month period. As I interviewed winner after winner, I discovered that every “success story” had a turning point, a dark night when all seemed lost. How and why these individuals had turned it around was the best part of the story. Every story I wrote left a trace of its strength in my life, and I began to long for these stories to be more widely heard. My other passion is photography, but that…is anothe
