cynthia cupplesI am a kind, caring and compassionate person. I am very interested in situations I consider unjust when it comes to treatment of those diagnosed with mental illness, substance abuse, etc. I feel the need to advocate on their behalf. I am particularly interested in women and criminology. I wish I could afford to quit my job and go volunteer in central Appalachia helping the families that live in severe poverty by offering them the skills they need to break this cycle. I am not afraid of a challenge and will fight for what I believe is right. I have a no nonsense attitude yet I have a great sense of humor. I live in Maine and run a seafood distibution center for a major on line seafood company.I love the NY Giants!!! Jeff CarneyI grew up on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, where I learned a lot about boating and seafood. I attended boarding school in Pennsylvania, but did not exactly graduate. (Hint: academics were not the problem.) I earned a bachelor's degree in English from Vassar College, and an MA in creative writing from the University of Illinois-Chicago. I have been teaching English and critical thinking at Snow College in central Utah for almost 19 years. In 2006, I published a novel for young adults that was reviewed quite favorably. I am an atheist by choice. I care passionately about civil liberties. I believe that government can be used to improve our quality of life, but I also believe that some choices belong to individuals. I support equal rights for LGBTs, including the right to marry, the legalization of marijuana, and virtually zero limits on speech and the press. I believe in logical consistency. If, for example, you want to outlaw abortion (I don't), then you cannot rationally make exceptions for rape and incest. I recognize that women in such situations suffer more pain than I can imagine. But if you believe abortion is murder (I don't) then it is always murder. The mother's emotions cannot change that. Partisanship, and the logical inconsistency that follows from it, contribute to many of our nation's problems. I believe the state of American education is deplorable. I have seen many students fail in college because their K-12 experiences left them utterly unprepared. Everyone is to blame: parents, educators, educational systems, legislators, indeed the entire American culture, which unfortunately values NASCAR more than reading.
