There's contrasting reactions in Lebanon to a U.N. court's decision to order the release of four senior officials held in connection with the assassination of Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

Syria issues decree to establish diplomatic relations with Lebanon

Syria and Lebanon formally established diplomatic ties on Wednesday for the first time since independence 60 years ago, turning a new page in relations between Beirut and its powerful one-time powerbroker. A statement signed by Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Muallem and visiting Lebanese counterpart Fawzi Salloukh announced "the launch of diplomatic relations between the Syrian Arab Republic and the Lebanese republic effective today, October 15, 2008."

UN soldiers in Lebanon, overseeing a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, are also helping the country get back on its feet economically. French UN soldiers recently built an olive oil press and a bakery in the south of the country.

The doctors were from the volunteer group 'Doctors of Peace', they spent more than two weeks in Gaza, treating the casualties from the Israeli attacks. The medics said that many of the people they treated were children. The Israeli assault on Gaza is now into its 21st day. The doctors have also served in other areas of conflict such as Lebanon and Kosovo.
