Novartis to Slash 1,400 Jobs at U.S. General Medicines Unit;"Officials from Basel, Switzerland-based Novartis AG (NYSE:NVS) announced Tuesday that they will downsize the company's U.S. general medicines unit in an effort to boost efficiency.1,400 workers out of a total 6,500 employees will be let go, effective January 1, 2011.The restructuring will cost the firm approximately $85 million.""We are in a culture of continuous improvement and, as such, we always are looking for ways to improve our productivity so that we can free up resources for further investments into innovation and growth,"" said Novartis spokesman Eric Althoff.Novartis officials said in a statement, ""It is critical to realign the general medicines field force to sharpen focus on the greatest opportunities for growth.""Shares of the firm are trading 1.80% lower on the news, at $53.60."
European Medicines Agency Approved Pediatric InvestigationalCell Therapeutics (NASDAQ:CTIC) announced that the European Medicines Agency approved the company's Pixuvri Pediatric Investigation Plan for the treatment of lymphoid malignancies and solid tumors in children between the ages of six months and 18 years.The company submitted a Marketing Authorization Application for Pixuvri approval in Europe as monotherapy for the treatment of adult patients with multiply relapsed or refractory, aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.Cell Therapeutics should find initial resistance at its 50-day moving average (MA) of $0.39 and further resistance at its 200-day MA of $0.51.
