The Takeda Oncology Company and Sunesis Pharmaceuticals (SNSS) announced a license agreement for the development of Sunesis' oral, selective pan-Raf kinase inhibitor and one additional undisclosed kinase inhibitor program in oncology. These programs were part of Sunesis' 2004 multi-kinase inhibitor collaboration with Biogen Idec. Following Biogen Idec's November 2010 announcement to focus on neurology and spin out or outlicense its oncology assets, Millennium acquired two of these oncology assets and will continue the development of these in collaboration with Sunesis. Cephalon Inc (NASDAQ:CEPH) said late Monday that it will acquire privately held Gemin X Pharmaceuticals for $225 million in cash, in a deal to strengthen the company's lineup of cancer treatments.Gemin X's private shareholders could receive up to an additional $300 million in cash payments if certain regulatory and sales goals are achieved.Kevin Buchi, CEO of Cephalon, said, "I am pleased to have entered into a merger agreement with Gemin X. Its array of novel, targeted cancer therapeutics is a welcome addition to our current oncology portfolio. I am particularly excited about Gemin X's lead compound, obatoclax, which if successful has the potential to significantly benefit patients suffering from small cell lung cancer - a devastating disease for which current treatments are limited and additional therapies are desperately needed."

Shares of Savient Pharmaceuticals (SVNT) are higher in morning trade as the company said it named John H. Johnson as Chief Executive Officer, effective January 31. He will also serve as a member of Savient's board of directors. Most recently, he served as a Senior Vice President of Eli Lilly and Company (LLY) and President of Lilly Oncology Business Unit. Savient shares are up 1.74%, or $0.17, to $10.07.

Sanofi-Aventis (NYSE:SNY) said a two-year phase III study of its MS drug teriflunomide reduced the relapse rate of patients by 31%, according to a Wall Street Journal report.The study showed that the drug also reduced disability progression by 30% and 24%, depending on the dose. The results were presented at the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis congress in Sweden.The drug is one of the company's 26 projects in late stage development.Sanofi-Aventis is a global pharmaceutical company that researches, develops and manufactures prescription pharmaceuticals and vaccines.
