Sri Lanka's military says it has confined Tamil Tigers separatists to a no-fire zone where tens of thousands of civilians are holed up after hundreds of rebels were killed.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam are confined to an area of 58 sqaure km (22 sq miles). The Sri Lankan army said they are battling the Tigers house to house in the north-eastern part of the country. Military commanders expect the final battle to take place on a narrow strip of coconut groves. Aid agencies estimate that around 200,000 people are caught up in the conflict zone. The government aims to end a conflict that goes back to 1983, and is considered as Asia's longest-running civil war.

Fears are rising for the safety of hundreds of thousands of people trapped in Sri Lanka's war zone. Sri Lankan forces are closing in on the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, leading many to believe that the 25-year conflict is coming to and end. Nonetheless, the United Nations and the International Committee of the Red Cross say around 250,000 civilians are trapped in the conflict zone. India, which is home to around 60 million Tamils, has offered aid to Sri Lanka to assist the country with the rebuilding of its infrastructure, but it has made no mention of a truce.
