Subliminal Technology - a Breakthrough in Mind Control

Musarrat Sheikh
Subliminal Technology is believed to have originated in 1957. Subliminal infers a level below the level of normal perception and subliminal messaging came into much prominence in 1980 with the publication of The Clam-Plate Orgy and other Subliminals the Media use to manipulate Your Behavior by Wilson Bryan Key. Subliminal Technology embraces the concept of subliminal messaging in audio / video or any other format of communication where the intended message is in a hidden form so that it is not easily perceived by the active conscious mind, thus leaving it to be processed only by the subconscious with a higher intensity of efficiency so that the desired message could be delivered to the target with much greater force than if it were delivered through the traditional channel of our conscious mind.

To put it in some other words, the idea is to hide the actual message in sound or image form from normal perception, but nevertheless designed for the person or persons at whom the message is directed to act upon it through their subconscious which is much more efficient. Well, it may seem crazy. Anybody would ask how one could act upon something that is made invisible or inaudible to the targeted recipient. In fact that is the million-dollar question and the crux of the matter we are trying to discuss here.

The wonder is that the Subliminal Concept had been demonstrated to actually happen in so many instances, that you cannot help but be intrigued that there is some strange phenomenon behind it although not strongly supported by any empirical research.

Whether we accept the hypnotic / psychological and other technological aspects behind the concept of subliminal messages or its impact as a successful method of attaining difficult goals in real life, it could be fun sometimes to look for hidden messages inside apparently very innocent looking images, words, music, advertisements etc. that we come across in our day to day lives.

Here are a few examples as just some food for thought.

1.Pepsi Neo Advertisement - 1990

Pepsi came up with a neon-designed can for a promotional campaign in1990. If you kept one can over another and just turned one of them to a pre-planned position, the word "SEX" was clearly visible. This news spread like wild fire and attracted a lot of attention to the can with the result of a thumping success of the promotional campaign. Was it a purposely-designed gimmick in the form of a subliminal message that ultimately achieved something extraordinary?

2.A Floor Tile Advertisement with the image of a woman holding a cup

This Ad had appeared in the British Yellow Pages. However if you covered the bottommost part of it up to where the fingers begin from the palm and turn the image upside down, then you see a young girl fingering herself. Mind you, this was an ad for floor tiles, although the image was a woman holding a cup. If it wasn't deliberately designed to gain from the added attention drawn to the advertisement, what was it?

3.Coca Cola Logo.

If you turn the Coca Cola logo (1986) on its side, and let your imagination run riot a bit, what you see is a man smoking. (some claim it is a man snorting cocaine) never mind exactly what, but still the hidden message (if it was deliberately intended) is quite clear...

4.Led Zepplin's Audio - Stairway to Heaven

Some people claim that if you play the above song in the reverse order, that you "hear" satanic messages that can influence you for evil actions. (You can flip an MP3 in the reverse order with some software like Audacity or Sound Forge).

While on this topic, you may consider not only the above audio for that matter. You may be well aware that underground / heavy metal music of so many other rock artistes such as for instance Cradle of Filth, with partly audible sound tracks mixed underneath some louder tracks which are supposed to be heard by the subconscious mind only and not by the conscious mind, and sometimes with audible messages included, but played on the reverse that some fans enjoy in rapturous ecstasy while not being perceptible to some other more conventional music lovers. Is it the subliminal message that is behind the extraordinary success of heavy metal music with only a particular segment of music lovers?

All this present some intriguing evidence that there is in fact some uncanny phenomenon that is difficult to comprehend by a normal conscious mind in subliminal messages. The message may be sent just as a joke, or to motivate, to achieve, to heal, to destroy or may be to kill. But fortunately we don't see too many happenings on the negative side such as destroying and killing. On the other hand, there are so many CDs, Audios or Audio Visuals and DVDs and even a Subliminal Flash Software now in the market for as low as $ 30.00 claimed by their sellers to be designed to communicate directly with the subconscious, bypassing the conscious mind, and some with money back guarantees too, which they claim are designed to make drastic changes within yourself for attainment of high goals, enhance your personality, make a success of love or family life, to make money fast, for weight loss, physical well being, cure from diseases and to get over a phobia, drop your smoking habit and almost anything (on a "you name it - we have it" basis) never before thought possible. It is apparent that this technology has its bases in meditation, yogi exercises, will power, hypnotism and such similar mental and spiritual attributes.

But are you skeptical about all this? It sounds too good to be true, one may muse. Another may well ask, so why can't they do these things (if they can be actually done as claimed) in a more direct and conventional manner instead of employing complicated and unconventional procedures?

The answer to that question may lie in the following explanation. Our mind can be compared to an iceberg with 10% portion above water as our conscious mind and the balance 90% under the surface of water as our subconscious mind. If you give something that can be handled by your conscious mind, then it will not reach your subconscious mind. So, if you present it in a manner that the conscious mind cannot handle it, then it invariably goes to your subconscious mind. When the subconscious attacks a problem, it is said to process information at the speed of light whereas normally our conscious brain processes at a speed of only 40 miles per hour (according to Hines)!
