Suburban Girl - a Movie Review

Suburban Girl is a 2007 movie starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and Alec Baldwin. Sarah Michelle Gellar is Brett, a naïve 25-year-old associated editor in New York City. Alec Baldwin is Archie Knox, a 50-year-old famous editor who romances Brett. Suburban Girl is about their relationship and it changes Brett.

The movie started off with two strikes before I even watched it. The first strike is the DVD box cover. It is deceiving as is most DVD box covers nowadays. Alec Baldwin looks like he is 20 years younger. If I didn't know better, I would say someone borrowed a pic of Alec from Beatlejuice. It is amazing what graphic artists can do with airbrushes. The movie received the second strike as I read the back of the DVD cover: "based on stories from the best-selling book The Girls' Guide to Hunting and Fishing." I really dread any movie that is based on a book because it usually bears no resemblance to the book. Since I have never read that book, I decided to give the movie a try. I am so glad I did.

Suburban Girl was a pleasant surprise. I am not for sure why the movie went straight to video because I think it could have done great at the theaters. Sarah and Alec had great chemistry together. I am not a big fan of Alec Baldwin but I thought he was excellent in the movie. The storyline was very entertaining and moved along smoothly. The sex scene between Brett and Archie was done very tastefully. I only cringed for a second at the thought of her sleeping with someone old enough to be her father. I enjoyed the ending even if it wasn't the typical happy ending. Overall the movie was great. I give it 5 out of 5 stars.
