Subway Fares Going Up in New York City

May Monten
The subway fares are going up again on Thursday, December 30, 2010. Here are the new rates:

Unlimited-ride passes

The price of a 30-day unlimited pass is rising from $89 to $104. A 7-day pass is going from $27 to $29. The 14-day and 1-day passes are being eliminated.

Metro Card bonuses

The bonus for buying a pay-per-ride Metro Card used to be 15 percent if you bought $8 or more at a time. That's now dropped to a 7 percent bonus, with the requirement that you buy $10 or more.

Single ride

This gets confusing. A single ride remains $2.25, but a one-ride ticket is $2.50.

So -- if you put more than $2.50, but less than $10 on a Metro Card, rides will be $2.25 each. Over $10, then the 7 percent bonus kicks in, which drops the actual cost of a ride to a bit over $2.10. (Under the old system, the actual price-per-ride, with the discount, was $1.95).

When should you buy a monthly pass?

With the cost of a monthly pass being $104.00, and the cost of a single ride being $2.10 (when you put $10 or more at a time on a Metro Card), you would be better off buying a monthly pass if you take the subway for more than 49 trips per month. Otherwise, you'd save money by buying a pay-per-ride Metro Card instead. (Keep in mind, though, that if you buy a monthly pass with a credit or debit card, and you lose it, you can get a replacement. There is no such perk for the pay-per-ride cards.)

What about your old Metro Cards?

If you already have an unlimited pass that you bought before December 30, 2010 that hasn't expired yet, you can continue to use it for its regular length of time. However, if you bought it but haven't activated it yet, you must swipe it to activate it by January 10, 2011 in order to get the full period of time, as 1-day passes wil expire on that day, 7-day passes on January 16, 14-day passes on January 23, and 30-day passes on February 8.

Pay-per-ride Metro Cards are good until the expiration date on the back.

Other increases

Long Island Railroad, Metro North, and bridge and tunnel tolls are also going up.

Too bad everyone's pay doesn't increase as much as the transportation rates do!

Yeah. It's still probably a lot less expensive than owning/operating a car, but it keeps on going up.
