Successful Affiliates Start with Clear Goals

Plan Your Way to Affiliate Marketing Success

Jennifer Ledbetter
Successful affiliates have one definite trait in common; the ability to plan their way to online success. As in any other business, one must have goals and a planned route to achieve those goals. When outlining your plan for your affiliate marketing business, ask yourself the following five questions. The answers will help you organize your affiliate marketing business strategy that provides you with your step-by-step action to achieve online success.

1. Affiliate Marketing Success Question #1 -

"How much do I need to earn from affiliate marketing?"

If you are entering affiliate marketing as a way to bring additional revenue into your household, you may not have the same pressing need to set aggressive goals as someone who needs revenue now. Sit down, pen and paper in hand, and figure it out. Remember, the question is, "How much do you need", not "how much do you want".

Knowing how much you need to earn from affiliate marketing each day will be a clear guidepost of the actions you must take each day to achieve online success.

2. Affiliate Marketing Success Question #2 -

"How much time do I have?"

I am going to be flat-out and brutally honest here - if you are coming in to affiliate marketing to pay the bills, and not for "extra" cash, be prepared to work no less than 10 hours a day. Online success from affiliate marketing, or any online business, requires dedication and time.

I don't care what the flashy sales page promised you - There is no such thing as "give me your money and you'll be rich with zero effort".

If you are entering affiliate marketing part-time to begin with, honestly decide how much time you have to spend on your online business. Keep in mind that you may be all fired up and willing to invest hours and hours of your free time right now, but it may not be long before you burn out. If you feel you have 3 hours a night, 5 nights a week... plan your goals to include TWO hours a night. if you work three hours... great! You also won't get discouraged when you only spend two hours a night on your affiliate business.

3. Affiliate Marketing Success Question #3 -

"How much revenue do I have to invest in my affiliate business?"

This is a very important question. Calculate how much you have to invest and break this number down into a daily amount. Trust me, this will help. Having a clear-cut amount you can spend per day will help deter costs from sneaking up and surprising you.

You may need a website. You may want to run paid advertising. You will need tools and resources to help with your online business. Knowing how much you can spend each day will allow you to budget these business costs appropriately.

4. Affiliate Marketing Success Question #4 -

"Where do I want to be one year from now?"

This may seem like a silly question. I promise you this question is anything but silly. Get yourself in a quiet place where you can really focus on this question. Again, put pen to paper and write it out. Please avoid general answers such as, "I want to be financially free". What is "financially free" to you? No credit card debt? A paid off mortgage? Being able to quit your current job? Having Mom home with the kids?

Be specific. If you don't know where you want to be in one year, how will you plan how to get there? After all, knowing where you are going is the first step to getting there!

5. Affiliate Marketing Success Question #5 -

"Why am I doing this?"

This question may appear to be a repeat of Affiliate Success Question #4. It is not. This is not a financial question. There are no numbers to crunch to get the answer to "Why" you are pursuing an online business in affiliate marketing.

This question has a personal answer. This answer will be as unique as you are. The answer could be as simple as, "I am just curious to see if I can do this" to a more serious answer such as, "I want to have more control over my own destiny".

This question may also seem irrelevant to goal planning for affiliate marketers. It is not. Online success is preceded by goals and a strategy to achieve those goals. However, there is one element that no number-crunching, online program, or affiliate guide can provide - motivation. Motivation is individual. Understanding your personal motivation can help you to stick to your daily plans and reach online success.

Affiliate marketing success can be achieved by anyone who not only sets their mind to it, but also provides clear-cut goals for them self. While I continue to hear rumblings that 95% of affiliate marketers fail, I have to beg to differ. I believe 95% of those that enter affiliate marketing fail to plan. Goal setting is key to affiliate success or failure.
