Successful Budgeting - Keys to Maintaining a Good Household Budget
How to Keep a Viable Household Budget
Stick To It!
I know this one should be obvious but this is where a lot of people fall short. There is no point in creating a budget if you aren't going to follow it. Sticking to a good budget will lower your monthly spending significantly but only if you follow your budget to the letter. This is not an area in your everyday life that you can afford to be lax or lazy, strictly following your planned budget is well worth the effort.
Make sure that your budget is realistic. Don't under-budget for things that you know you will spend more on in an average month. You can't assume that you will lower your bills enough to fit your budget, budget in your standard bill costs and then work on reducing them after. Be realistic and stick to it!
Track Your Spending
Before creating a good budget you need to track your monthly spending. Take the first month or two of your budgeting as sort of a trial period and track every penny you spend. You need to track everything, even the things that seem inconsequential. Frivolous spending is one of the biggest leaks in a monthly budget and ensuring that you track these small expenses will help eliminate or lower them in over the long term.
Keeping close tabs on every dollar that leaves your checking account and every little thing you purchase will help when creating a realistic budget that you can stick to.
Budget for the Unexpected
It's not enough to simply budget for your standard monthly expenses, you have to take into account the unexpected costs that come with everyday life. I would recommend at least 5-10 percent of your monthly budget be tacked on as an unexpected event fund. Keep money put aside for things that you can't plan for including
- Car Trouble
- Medical Expenses
- Appliance and Home Repairs
- And many other things...
Keeping money aside for these things allows you to keep with your budget even when something blind sides you and you are faced with unforeseen expenses.
Monitor Your Bills
Keeping a close eye on your monthly bills and whether they increase or decrease is invaluable when maintaining a successful budget. Closely monitoring expenses such as your monthly electricity and water usage can have a significant impact on your budget in a positive or negative way. Following these tips when creating and sticking to your monthly budget will help ensure that your costs are kept as low as possible and that as much of your monthly income as possible stays in your pockets or goes to things you enjoy rather than things you have to pay for.
