Successful Budgeting - Lowering Your Monthly Bills

Follow These Tips to Help Lower Your Monthly Expenses

One of the biggest keys to successful budgeting is lowering your monthly expenditures as much as possible. There are several ways to lower your regular monthly bills that most people don't pay nearly enough attention to. Following these key points will help lower your monthly costs by a significant margin over the course of a year.

Monitor Your Electricity Use

Closely monitoring your electricity usage can help lower your monthly electric bill significantly. Most people know they should turn off lights in rooms that they are not using but you should go even further than this.

If your computer or other electronic devices run through a power strip, make sure you are turning off the power strip as well as the devices when they are not in use. This goes hand in hand with ensuring that all of your unused electronics are shut off. If you finish watching a DVD don't just turn off the TV when you're done, turn off the DVD player as well. Shut off your speakers, printer, and monitor along with your tower when you are done working on your PC. Making sure that all of your component electronics are turned off in addition to the primary one you are using will help lower your monthly costs.

Another method of lowering your electric bill is by not overusing things that aren't needed. If you have a small load of dishes to wash, do them in the sink instead of the dish washer. The dish washer uses more water and draws on your electricity. If your phone is fully charged, don't leave it plugged in just because it's convenient. That goes with any device that you want to keep charged be it a laptop, camera, or anything else. Avoid the laziness that comes with convenience and it will help lower your monthly costs in major ways.

Along with electricity usage comes one of your other large monthly bills...

Monitoring Your Water Usage

Keeping a close eye on your water usage can reveal large savings over the course of a year. Your water use can be a little more difficult to monitor that electric but that's ok, just being diligent will help lower your costs.

When washing dishes in your sink, fill one side of your sink with wash water. This water is fine to use for a normal sized load of dishes barring anything particular greasy or messy. This saves a large amount of water over keeping the faucet running and hand washing each individual dish and a huge amount over running your dish washer.

Shortening your showers is also a good option for lowering your water bill. I don't recommend lessening the relaxing effect a nice hot shower has on most people as your stress level is very important these days, four or five minutes off of your shower can save hundreds of gallons of water over the course of a year. The same goes with activities like brushing your teeth or washing your face. Keep the faucet turned off when you're not actively using it, turning it on only when specifically needed.

Following a Budget

Everyone should keep and follow a fairly strict budget. The amount of money this saves over the year will surprise every one of you. Tracking your spending and keeping within your budget guidelines will ensure that you won't overspend on items that are frivolous and unnecessary.
