Before you start search engine optimization campaign for any website, you need to prepare a strategy to ensure the success of your campaign. The most important aspects to be considered are:
1. Define your goal: You should be very clear about the goals and objective of your website. Before starting the task, you should be sure about the overall motivation for optimizing the site: whether you want to drive more traffic or sales, more subscribers, more publicity etc.
2. Identify you competitors: Watch your competitors very carefully. Identify some of your main competitors, and study what are their URLs, what keywords are they targeting, what are they doing and what they are not doing.
3. Identify your niche audience: Identify your niche audience, their geological segmentation and demographics. Frame a plan to attract your target audience.
4. Keyword research: This is perhaps the most important step for SEO success. The 3 steps mentioned above come into play while doing keyword research. While researching the keywords, you should think from your user's point of view. If you want to generate only traffic, you can go for more generic keywords. These are usually not the convertible ones but help in improving the CTR of your site. For sales and leads generation, you should always opt for the specific ones.
5. Geographical target market: If the site's geographical target market is region specific (country, state or town specific), then you must consider optimization plans for local search.
This initial analysis will help you to build a framework for your SEO project and establish limitations for the size and scope of the campaign. This will also help in determining the most logical keywords and phrases to target, as well as which search engines to submit the site to.
So when you are absolutely clear about your motivations for optimizing the site, the target markets, competitors and keywords you're ready to tackle the job.
