In reality there isn't one person that is exonerated to getting the axe at work, mostly when you consider the financial downturn we're faced by. But one thing you can do is lower your chances of getting hatched.

If you feel like you have to make an improvement at work to avoid getting laid off, you will need to be loyal, reliable, work on your problem solving skills, become a revenue producing employee, improve your personality by being pleasant and flexibility.

Being outspoken about your commitment to your workplace is essential to become an asset. In fact 85% of CEOs concluded that a loyal employee is what is admired the most in regards to traits that they look for within their staff. This conclusion came from a survey performed by Manpower Inc.

Always look for ways of helping to make your boss' life easier. Give the confidence that you will always complete tasks accurately and timely, this will make you reliable in his eyes. Stay ahead of the game by anticipating your boss' needs. In other words be self motivated and a self-starter that focuses on exceeding expectations.

Don't approach your boss with problems constantly, but if you must, you should also provide potential solutions.

If your job description is one that requires that you generate money for the company, look for ways to step up your game. But if you're in a position that doesn't demand that you generate revenue, find ways to succeed through cost savings strategies. There nothing better than showing your boss how you have saved the company money, mostly if that isn't even your responsibility.

Be professional and respectful, this way people will enjoy working with you. Being respected and liked by your coworkers is just as important as your boss' approval because it speak loud about your team-work abilities.

Make yourself available by being flexible. Being open and adaptable to changes within your workplace is considered valuable trait that's linked to loyalty because the company will be able to count on you on any projects and if there are any plans to reorganize your chances of making it are higher.

Put yourself in your boss' position so you can determine which kind of employee he or she would most likely keep in a financial downturn. Once you figure that out, become that type of employee so your chances of sticking around are better if the layoffs arrive.

Take into consideration that employees with strong work ethics are much more valuable to a corporation than those with a high IQ, so don't let yourself think that only smarts count, it's more about accountability, loyalty, and leadership.
