The story begins with a horrific scene involving a man trying to kill his stepdaughters in order to get their inheritance. He manages to kill one girl, then the older one fights back and winds up being framed for her sister's murder. The stepfather then has the girl committed to a mental hospital where he pays to have her death arranged neat and clean. With certain death just a few days away, the girl recruits a few others from the hospital and comes up with an escape plan. The rest of the movie depicts how they go about securing the items they need to escape, and of course the plan is far from perfect.
If you saw the trailers for this movie, you were treated with a bunch of different action sequences like giant samurais, World War I trenches, and so on. Each major action piece in this movie takes place in a different genre. There are swordfights with samurais, knights and orcs storming a castle, steampunk Nazis in WWI, and even robots. Each sequence is like a video game level where they must fight their way through to gain the item needed for their escape from the asylum. All of the action and special effects are backed by a killer soundtrack, including one of the best ever uses of Bjork's Army of Me.
Sucker Punch may come off as too much for some folks, but there has never been anything else quite like it, and that's a good thing.
