Sucking the Air Out of Food Storage Bags

Chris Hetzler
Ever see those infomercials about space bags? You know, the one where you pile everything you own into a plastic bag and then suck the air out with a vacuum? With the exclusive TV offer you can get 200 for $19.95 or something like that. My question is, how come nobody ever came up with a way to suck the air out of a food storage bag?

It is so annoying to put lettuce or deli-meat into one of these bags to keep it fresh and then try to shut the produce or deli drawer. The air inside puffs the bag up and it is impossible to do anything except open the bag and let the air out, hold down on it and seal it again and hope you get all the air out the first time so you don't have to repeat the process. It seems to defeat the purpose of the food storage bags which were invented for convenience in the first place.

It would be really nice if somebody would invent some way to let the air out after you seal the bag. Perhaps a peel and re-seal vent, a button to release the air or something similar. Let's face it, nobody wants to get their vacuum out and suck the air out of a deli meat storage bag!
