SCENE 8 - At the executive airport in Mason County, Virginia.
It's afternoon. Bobby and Tara are in the operations van. Dimitrius and Myles are in a parked car with a view of the runway. Several corporate and other private jets and airplanes are visible, both in hangars and along the tarmac.
Bobby and Tara are watching and waiting.
Tara: I sort of don't want to get their hopes up. Jack and Sue, I mean.
Bobby nods.
Bobby: Yeah, I know what you mean. I don't know what it's all about. But I know what you mean.
Tara nods, feeling the situation is a little awkward.
Tara: I just hope Myles and D really have snagged the party plane.
Bobby: Aruba or bust.
Cut to the bullpen.
Jack and Sue are sitting beside each other, resting on Sue's desk with their feet on the floor and their ankles crossed. They are facing the entrance-way to the bullpen. They are chatting pleasantly.
Jack: (listening) Brace yourself. The thundering herd is about to put the "bull" in bullpen.
Dimitrius, Bobby, Myles, Tara and Lucy roar into the bullpen. They are throwing down files and papers, taking off their coats, opening and closing drawers, shaking their heads, muttering to themselves.
Bobby: That was a dead end.
Myles: Not completely. We moved the ball forward. Slightly.
Tara: It's not over. 'Til it's over.
Dimitrius: (walking past Jack and Sue, noticing their light mood) What's the occasion? You didn't find Trotter, did you?
Bobby: Yes, you two look like you've been swinging on a star?
Lucy: How was house hunting with Celtic Woman?
Tara: I hope it wasn't . . . revealing.
Sue: Surprisingly, it turned out to be really fun.
Lucy: You're kidding.
Sue: At least for Jack and me. I mean, I won't speak for Jack. But I thought it was fun. Maybe because Jack and I had a common . . .
Lucy: Enemy?
Jack: Yeah. We sort of got a kick out of being at the old homestead.
Lucy: What are you talking about?
Jack: Turns out the house owned by the friends of Carly's parents, the one she's going to house sit, is the house Sue and I lived in while we were marr--- (just then Jack turns to look toward the entrance-way to the bullpen) --- ried.
Cut to the entrance-way to the bullpen.
Carly is standing in the entrance-way. Her eyes are wide with surprise.
Carly: "Marr . . . ried"?
Jack: Almost . . . married.
Sue: Briefly almost married.
Dimitrius: Jack, (making a whoosh sound and gesture with his hand) . . . Just let it go, brother.
Carly: (still standing in the entrance-way) Oh, and this explains a lot. And you thought you could fool me into thinking that you were interested in me and not her.
The entire team lets out a low, shocked "whoa" in unison. Jack stands frozen in the center of the bullpen, staring at Carly.
Carly stammers for a moment, trying to find her words.
Carly: Jack Hudson, I wouldn't go to the "Festival on Ice" with you if . . . if my hair color depended on it!
Myles: That's different. Even I hadn't heard that one before.
Carly: Why don't you just . . . take your ex-wife?
Carly turns and huffs off.
All had been standing there, witnessing this scene, frozen. Now they start breathing and moving again, shaking their heads.
Jack: At least she didn't slap me.
Myles: Astonishing. We just witnessed the second time in Jack's life that he actually got turned down.
Dimitrius: Yes. The first time was by Sue, when she was Jack's almost wife.
Bobby: I don't know. Between Finbar Trotter and Celtic Woman, I think we've had quite enough of the blarney for this week.
Myles launches into a rousing rendition of "Who Threw The Overalls in Mrs. Murphy's Chowder?," by George L. Giefer.
Myles: (singing the Irish ditty) "Who threw the overalls in Mrs. Murphy's chowder?"
Lucy: Please.
Myles: (continuing to sing) "Nobody spoke, so he shouted all the louder."
Lucy: Myles!
Jack: The funny thing is, I had completely forgotten about the "Festival on Ice" thing anyway.
Bobby: It's not a bad idea, though.
Jack: What?
Bobby: To take your former almost wife. She likes figure skating.
Jack and Sue look a little embarrassed.
Tara: All's quiet right now on the Trotter front. And we can always page you.
Lucy: It's not like you'll be on the moon.
Sue: Yes, but---
Dimitrius: And it can't possibly be a date if Randy is paying for it.
Lucy: That's not a date, that's a Randy-thon.
Bobby: Non-refundable, remember? All capital letters, underlined.
Myles: Look at it this way. Remember that time Lucy and I had to use Sue's tickets to that celebrity chef thing-a-ma-bob? There's some kind of moral equivalency in there. The universe has a way of working these things out.
Jack: (looking tentatively at Sue) I don't know . . .
Bobby walks past Jack and speaks into his ear as he does so.
Bobby: (quietly, just to Jack) Could be your last week here, mate. Garrett told us.
Jack looks steadily at Sue.
Cut to Jack and Sue standing on the sidewalk outside the FBI building.
Jack: So . . . I'll pick you up at seven.
Sue: You're sure? We don't have to do this.
Jack: We decided to go. (signing; subtitles show) Let's enjoy it.
Sue: (signing back) Okay. Let's enjoy it.
Jack: By the way, it's my turn to apologize for losing it. At the house today. I don't know what came over me. I hope I didn't make you mad.
Sue: What about me? I hope I didn't embarrass you. Too much. Telling that story about when we were all working late and Tara put Monday Night Football up on the big screen in the bullpen---
Jack: And I allegedly said, "Look. The football is as big as my head."
Sue: Allegedly.
Jack: You know what? I wasn't embarrassed. (signing) I enjoyed myself.
Sue raises her eyebrows in surprise.
Jack: (signing) Sort of.
Sue laughs.
Sue: I wasn't mad. (signing) I enjoyed myself.
Jack looks at her with approval.
Sue: (signing) Sort of.
SCENE 9 - At the bullpen.
It's after work hours and the building is quiet. Dimitrius, Bobby, Myles, Tara and Lucy seem reluctant to go home. They each seem to find something to continue to work on. There's a tension in the air.
Myles: (throwing down his pen) You know what? Let's just go out to the airport and see what happens.
Bobby: (quickly) I agree.
Myles: I know we don't have any particular leads on tonight, but . . .
Dimitrius: Sometimes you gotta go with your gut.
Tara: I'm in.
Lucy: Me, too.
They all jump up to leave.
Cut to the executive airport.
Lucy and Tara are in the van near a hangar. Tara is on the headset, monitoring communications and surveillance video.
Bobby is in a car parked in a lot outside the terminal. He appears to be waiting to pick someone up.
Dimitrius and Myles are inside the small terminal. They appear to be waiting for a flight. They are both wearing earbuds, as if they are listening to music. Dimitrius is reading on his phone.
Tara: (on her headset) "Tailfeather." Moving toward north runway in front of Hangar Two.
Bobby looks out and sees the plane, with the tail number they have been tracking, being moved out of the hangar.
Cut to Jack and Sue walking toward the entrance of the RMA Center. They are walking in silence, contemplating.
Jack: (looking up) Here we are.
Jack and Sue stop walking. They look at the venue, then turn and look at each other. Sue smiles a little. After a moment, she speaks.
Sue: Sometimes I wish I could read minds as well as I can read lips.
Jack: Really. . . . Well, I can help you out with that. I was just thinking . . . about the Indian Ocean. And Helsinki. And . . . Well. (Jack looks away briefly.) To be honest. About you and Levi, growing old together..
Sue looks at Jack and narrows her eyes.
Sue: You heard me?
Jack: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to.
Jack and Sue smile and start walking again. Then they stop and turn to each other again.
Jack: Um. Since this could be our last week together . . . working together, for a long time . . .
Sue: I'm not sure I want to spend it at the "Festival on Ice."
Jack: My thoughts exactly.
Cut to the executive airport.
It's night. "Tailfeather," the plane with the tail number the team is hunting, has been moved out in front of the hangar. There is little activity anywhere.
Tara: (shaking her head, reviewing the screen) Nothing. They moved the plane out, then nothing.
Cut to Dimitrius and Myles sitting inside the terminal
Dimitrius calls Tara.
Dimitrius: We can't stay much longer without looking suspicious. We'll take the long way around and change places with you and Lucy.
Cut to Tara and Lucy walking into the terminal waiting area.
Tara: (looking around) (to Lucy) I'm just going to check the Ladies Room.
Lucy nods and goes to sit down.
Cut to Tara entering the Ladies Room. A woman is inside, adjusting her hair. Tara recognizes the woman as Linda Renault, "Girlfriend." Tara walks up to the sink area and also begins to adjust her hair, gazing into the mirror.
Tara: (noticing Girlfriend's pendant necklace, which has several diamonds in the setting) (looking at Girlfriend in the mirror ) I'm sorry. I can't help myself. I have to say that that diamond pendant is just stunning.
Girlfriend gives Tara a "you are so pathetic" look, rolls her eyes, turns and walks out.
Tara calls Lucy on her phone.
Tara: (to Lucy) Girlfriend!
Lucy: Where? (Lucy stands up nonchalantly.)
Tara: Just leaving the restroom now.
Lucy hangs up and starts to walk toward the door that opens onto the walk to the tarmac. Lucy checks her watch as if she's expecting a flight to arrive. Girlfriend walks past and stops outside to make a phone call.
Two mechanics, wearing earphones, are now standing around the airplane.
Girlfriend calls one of them from where she's standing.
Girlfriend: Is it fixed yet? I don't want to spend my whole weekend in this crummy terminal.
Cut to Bobby, still sitting in the parked vehicle in the parking lot.
Bobby calls Dimitrius in the van.
Bobby: (to Dimitrius) A couple of crew members or mechanics are about now.
Dimitrius: We see them. More importantly, Girlfriend is in front of the terminal, apparently waiting to board.
Bobby: I'm taking a walk.
Dimitrius: Okay.
Cut to the van.
Tara and Lucy get inside the van. Dimitrius and Myles are inside, but getting ready to leave, checking their guns.
Myles: Hopefully, we won't have to try to run that plane down on foot.
Dimitrius: Let's go.
Cut to the airplane sitting on the tarmac. A catering van pulls up. A man gets out of the van and takes a box of food and wine out of the van and loads it into the airplane. A man is visible in a passenger seat inside.
The catering van obstructs some of the view of the airplane from the parking lot. Hidden from that view, Girlfriend exits the catering van and boards the aircraft. Inside, she sits down next to Finbar Trotter. There is a bouquet of flowers on the seat next to her.
The van driver closes the airplane passenger door and drives the van away.
The two mechanics who had been milling about previously come back into view.
Cut to a car parked out of sight in the parking lot, but in a place where the airplane can be observed.
Jack, Sue and Levi (in the back seat) are inside. Sue is using binoculars to observe the mechanics.
Sue: He says, "Aruba, baby."
Jack: Aruba, baby.
The mechanics give a signal to the pilot, who tips his head to them and starts the airplane's engines.
Jack starts the car engine.
Jack: I may need to drive in front of that plane if that's the only way to stop it.
Sue: Okay.
Jack: Not with you in the car.
Sue: Oh.
Jack: You get out and act like you're taking Levi for a walk around the terminal. And try to call for backup.
The airplane engines and propellers are getting louder. The plane is starting to move forward to taxi to the runway.
Jack nods at Sue to go and she quickly gets out and gets Levi out.
Cut to Sue coming around the corner of the building, then walking quickly in front of the terminal. Sue is walking Levi on a leash and looking intently out at the airplane, while also looking down at her phone to see if her call has been picked up. She smacks into Bobby, who is walking from the other direction, also looking intently at the airplane and answering his phone. Bobby is shocked to see her.
Bobby: Oh, sorry--- Sue?
By now, the airplane noise is extremely loud. However, the plane has stopped moving forward.
Sue: Jack. (Sue points to the place Jack was taking the car.)
Bobby nods and sprints in that direction.
The airplane is still stopped. The two mechanics, wearing their hearing protection, drive out to the plane in a cart. Sue is surveying the situation, trying to see where Jack and Bobby are and if the others are in position.
Cut to Jack's car.
Jack is driving and Bobby is in the passenger seat. He's now got his headset on, connected to Dimitrius and Myles outside, near the plane, and Tara and Lucy in the van.
Bobby: (to Dimitrius) Then I found Jack wandering in the neighborhood as well. We're on the service road now. There's a place we can drive onto the tarmac if we have to. If we get there in time.
Cut to the airplane and Sue standing in front of the terminal, slowly walking Levi around.
The airplane is now starting to move again. It gets louder and louder. Sue looks around, trying to see where the team is positioned. She finally sees Jack's car emerge on a service road on the other side of the tarmac. Jack's car is almost directly across the tarmac from where Sue is standing. The airplane's path is going to cross directly in front of both of them at the same time.
The airplane is moving faster and almost into position to start take-off. Just as it gets almost directly in front of Sue and Jack, the plane comes to a halt again.
Cut to Jack and Bobby.
Jack: (driving the car) Hold on.
Jack guns the car a little, turns off the service road and starts out over the gravel and dirt strip between the road and the tarmac. Just as the car is about to drive onto the pavement (the tarmac) again, the back wheel gets stuck in a mud hole.
Jack: (realizing the car is stuck) Come on! (Jack pounds the steering wheel.)
Jack and Bobby quickly get out and crouch behind the car while they look around. It's quite dark where they are.
Bobby: We could disable it with a few well-placed rounds. (indicating the plane)
Jack: We may have to. . . . Look. There's Sue.
Cut to Sue and Levi in front of the terminal.
Sue kneels down to pet Levi as she looks and realizes that Jack's car is stuck. She looks all around and doesn't see anyone else. The airplane is starting to move forward again to get into position for take-off.
Sue unhooks Levi's leash. She looks directly at Levi, face to face.
Sue: Levi (pointing to her eyes). Stay where I can see you. (She points to her eyes again.) Now. Go find the goose! (She points a little to the airplane.)
Levi studies her for a brief moment, then takes off running. Levi runs in front of the plane, far enough away to not be in danger, but close enough to disrupt the plane's take-off. As Levi gets in front of the plane, he turns around to make sure he can see Sue. He runs in circles in front of the plane, looking for the goose.
Sue pretends Levi has gotten away from her.
Sue: (calling out and signaling with her hands) Levi! Come!
Levi immediately runs to Sue. She bends down and pets him.
Sue: Now. Levi, good boy. Go find the goose!
Levi runs out in front of the plane again, again stopping, looking, running in circles and returning to Sue when she calls to him.
Sue and Levi repeat this procedure yet again. Sue acts more frustrated each time Levi "gets away" from her.
Cut to Jack and Bobby.
Jack: Levi. He's stopping the plane.
Cut to the airplane. The passenger door flies open and a man gets out. Sue walks to meet him as he comes toward her. She calls Levi to her as she walks. The man is very angry. Sue recognizes him as the Shadow.
Shadow: Lady, get your dog under control or I'll shoot him.
Sue now can see inside the airplane. She glimpses Trotter as well as Girlfriend.
Sue: (to Shadow; speaking and signing) I'm sorry. He's upset by the noise.
Shadow: What are you, deaf?
Sue nods her head, shrugs and points to her ears.
Shadow: I don't know what's with you, but . . . Keep him on the leash or he's dead. Got it?
Sue shrugs as if she doesn't quite understand.
Cut to inside the airplane.
Girlfriend: (to Trotter) Finn, it's a dog. Don't let him shoot a dog.
Sue nods at the Shadow and gets Levi. She's thinking. Suddenly she bends down to pet Levi before walking back to the terminal.
Shadow: Come on, lady. Get going.
Sue: (to Levi) He won't shoot you, Levi. Go find the goose.
Levi takes off running, looking for the goose, and keeping his eye on Sue. Sue is nervous.
The Shadow is now very angry. He walks up and grabs Sue by the shoulder and jerks her up.
Shadow: (in Sue's face) Lady, I said get hold of your dog or I'll shoot it.
Trotter, now also angry, pulls the airplane door the rest of the way back and jumps out.
Trotter: (to Shadow) Just take care of the dog. I'll give the chick a little advice while you're gone.
Suddenly the airplane engine noise stops.
Cut to Jack and Bobby with their guns trained on Trotter.
Jack: I don't think so, Trotter.
Bobby: I think you're the one who's going to be getting advice. (showing his badge) FBI.
Cut to Dimitrius on the other side of the plane. He has Girlfriend at gunpoint and is watching the pilot get out of the airplane with his hands up.
Cut to Myles, who has Shadow handcuffed and is walking him back to the airplane area. .
Myles: (to Shadow) This is going to give you a whole new meaning for "a dog's life."
Cut to a broad concrete step outside the terminal building.
A couple of police cars are around and officers are checking the airplane.
Sue walks over to the step, sits down on it, and leans against the terminal wall. Her legs are stretched out in front of her, ankles crossed, and she rests her head against the wall.
Sue: (very tired) Wow.
Jack walks up and sits down beside Sue on the ground. He also stretches his legs out in front of him, crosses his ankles, and rests his head against the terminal wall.
Jack: (very tired) Wow.
Levi bounds up and nuzzles Sue's face and then Jack's. They both have very little energy to respond. Levi stretches himself out so that he is laying over both Sue and Jack's laps, with his head in Sue's lap.
Sue: (laughing) Okay, Levi.
Jack closes his eyes a little as he absent-mindedly pets Levi.
After a moment, Jack laughs a little and gives Sue a nudge on the leg. They turn their heads toward each other, wearily, and smile at each other a little. Then they let their heads roll back so that they are facing forward again. Their eyes are almost closed.
Jack raises his hand that is nearest Sue and Sue raises her hand that is nearest Jack. They do a little fist bump with the back of their hands. Then they each take a huge breath of relief and contentment.
Cut to Bobby, Dimitrius and Myles walking up the sidewalk in the direction of where Jack and Sue are sitting.
Bobby, Dimitrius and Myles see Jack and Sue fist bumping, seemingly in their sleep, as Levi lounges across the two of them. Bobby and Dimitrius look extremely puzzled.
Dimitrius: Business as usual.
Myles: (sighs) Ours is not to reason why.
