SCENE 9 - At FBI Headquarters

It's late and the building is almost deserted inside. Jack is walking quickly down the hallway, with Sue and Myles close behind. A woman steps out of an office a few doors ahead.

Woman: Agent Hudson?

Jack: Yes.

Woman: Everything's ready for you. (The woman motions them into the office.) Room A, please. Let me know if you need anything. (She sits down at a desk in the waiting area and returns to reading a book.)

Jack, Myles and Sue enter the conference room. When the door closes behind them, a light above the door turns from green to red.

Cut to inside the conference room.

There is a large conference table with big chairs around it. A telecommunication device is on the table. There is also a projector. Tara is already in the room.

Tara: Sue, there wasn't time to get your TTY device cleared for use in this room. But I can put the transcript of the conversation on the screen.

Sue nods.

Tara: (to Jack) Whenever you're ready.

Jack picks up the phone and listens.

Jack: (after listening) Yes. . . . Yes. . . . Special Agent Jack Hudson. . . . (looks around the room) Special Agent Myles Leland, Special Agent Tara Williams, Analyst Sue Thomas. . . . Thank you. (listens, then punches button to put the call on speaker phone).

Dalton: Commander Bill Dalton.

Jack: Special Agent Jack Hudson.

Dalton: Good morning. At least on this side of the world.

Jack: Yes.

Dalton: I got your verbal about a half-hour ago, maybe less. But I haven't received anything official yet. What I'm saying is, I haven't received your information through command channels yet.

Jack grimaces.

Jack: Where does that leave us?

Dalton: Makes things a little harder. Depends.

Jack: All I can tell you is that David Greene is in danger.

Dalton: (agreeing) I'm sure he is.

Crosstalk and radio communications can be heard on Dalton's end.

Dalton: So --- So, what I did was, based on your verbal, I went ahead and had one of my UAV pilots acquire a visual on those GPS coordinates, okay? So we've been watching that point for, maybe, 20 minutes now.

Jack: How long will it take to get written authorization?

Dalton: It's generally a very efficient process. But, since I'm able to talk to you directly, let me ask you a couple of questions. Did you personally see the tracking site up on the subject's computer?

Jack: Yes. And two members of my team saw it as well.

Dalton: Did you personally verify the number that was being tracked?

Jack: Yes.

Dalton: And, to the best of your knowledge, does the phone being tracked belong to David Greene, an investigative reporter who is an American citizen now present in the country of Afghanistan?

Jack: Yes.

Dalton: Okay. That helps. Just doing my job.

Jack: Yeah.

Dalton: Because I do have some discretion on the orders I am authorized to give, depending on the information I have and the circumstances. Like I said, based on the information you sent through your channels, I went ahead and got a visual on those coordinates. From what we see, Greene is traveling in an SUV with an unknown driver. Looks like a friendly. We haven't seen anything unusual in his route or pattern. However ---

Dalton interrupts talking to Jack to give directions on his end.

Dalton:: (talking to someone on his end) I need the overlay.

Dalton: (to Jack) Sorry about that. As I was saying, we do have another vehicle in the same area that is suspicious. It's been on our screen all day.

Jack: Connected to Greene?

Dalton: Not that we've seen. But it departed a known bad guy house about eight minutes ago. That always gets our attention. We're in the process of verifying the occupants. There are four guys in the vehicle. At least two of them are confirmed HVTs.

Tara types in the words "High Value Targets" so they appear on the screen.

Sue reads the words and nods.

Dalton: Needless to say, that's our primary focus right now. But we'll also be keeping an eye on Mr. Greene's travels for at least the next 24 hours while the case is being reviewed further.

Dalton: (to someone on his end) Okay, great. Thanks. (to Jack) Hudson, your agency's written transmission just came to me through CENTCOM. So all the "I's" are dotted and the "t's" are crossed now, anyway. (wrapping up the phone call) That does it. I have everything I need to respond to any situation that develops.

Jack: Okay, well ---

Dalton: Wait a minute.

Crosstalk on Dalton's end.

Dalton: (to Jack, calmly) Looks like our HVTs are showing an interest in Mr. Greene now that he's left the city and is headed down an open desert road.

Various radio communications and command talk can be heard from Dalton's end. There is a lot of static. Some phrases, calmly spoken, but moving rapidly, do come through:

"Vehicle 2 has moved behind vehicle 1, moving north by . . "

"Vehicle 1 accelerating to approximately . . . "

"Vehicle 2, occupant firing handgun, rear passenger-side window . . . "

(A commander's voice to pilot) "Acquire target. Fire when ready."

(The pilot responds immediately) "Target acquired."

"Fire."

A moment passes. All that is heard is some very faint crosstalk and static. The pilot's voice breaks in.

"Vehicle 2: Total destruction. No survivors."

(from the command center) "Roger that. Vehicle 2: Total destruction. No survivors."

More static. Then Dalton comes back fully on the line.

Dalton: Agent Hudson.

Jack: Yes.

Dalton: Mr. Greene is probably feeling a little shakey right now, based on what he just saw in his rearview mirror. But he's safe. And I expect someone from the U.S. Government will be around shortly to give him some friendly advice on his personal security situation. Is there anything else the United States military can do for you today?

Jack: No. That covers it, Commander Dalton. Appreciate it.

Dalton: Any time. Here to serve.

Jack pushes the button to end the call.

SCENE 10 - At a Chinese take-out store

It's very late at night. Jack and Sue are walking on the sidewalk, toward a Chinese take-out store.

Sue: I'm sorry about the interview today. I didn't realize you had the baby.

Jack: That's okay. I'm open to new experiences.

Sue: She's a very cute baby.

Jack: True, very true.

Sue: But, it was a distraction. The baby, taking all your attention. Sorry.

Jack: It does make it hard to work.

Sue looks a little suspicious of where this is going.

Jack: You know, when there's this babe sitting right there in front of you. She has this blonde hair. Big brown eyes that light up her whole face. That smile. And then, those cute little things she does with her hands. (making baby hand gestures)

Sue nods at Jack, rolling her eyes at him a little.

Jack: Yes, having a babe around makes it very difficult to work sometimes.

Sue: Jack, I can see the difference between "babe" and "baby," you know.

Jack: Yeah, so can I!

Sue really rolls her eyes now. She knows what's coming. They stop walking and Sue faces Jack.

Sue: Do I really need to say it?

Jack: (feigning innocence) Say what?

Sue: That Jack . . . just made a joke.

They laugh and Sue starts the short distance to the restaurant door.

Jack: (calling after her, when Sue glances back at him) You started it.

Sue finds herself at the restaurant door, a few steps ahead of Jack. Sue kooks back at Jack . He's still standing where he was on the sidewalk. He's looking at Sue, a little lost in thought. Then he "snaps back," smiles at her and moves to also go inside the restaurant.

Cut to Bobby, Myles, Jack, Sue, Tara, Lucy and Dimitrius inside a sparse Chinese take-out store. They are sitting around some small tables they have pushed together. They are eating out of Chinese food take-out containers. They are tired.

Bobby: So what happens when you work 20-some hours straight? You eat Chinese take-out for breakfast.

Myles: Life is so . . . sweet and sour.

Jack: (looking inside the container in his hand) Does anyone want the last Szechuan shrimp?

They all nod "no." Jack eats the shrimp.

Dimitrius: Another day in the neighborhood. What time is it, anyway?

An older Chinese woman enters the scene, mopping the floor. She proceeds to mop, somewhat slowly, passing in front of the table, from one side of it to the other. All watch her.

Sue: It's time to mop up.

Everyone laughs a little.

Myles: (tired) Jokesters, jokesters, everywhere.

Lucy: (to Myles) Eh.

Tara: (breaking open a fortune cookie) Here's what time it is. Fortune cookie time. I'll go first. (She reads the fortune.) "You will lead a glamorous life."

All ponder for a moment. Then they shoot down the fortune, saying "no," "nah," "forget it."

Sue: Okay. I'll go. (She breaks open her cookie.) Oh. (a little embarrassed.) "You can hide your eyes, but not your heart."

All ponder for a moment.

Tara: Whoaaaa-kay. Moving on.

Sue: Yes. Let's move on.

Lucy: Come on, Jack. Go for it.

Jack: (After some general encouragement, he breaks open his cookie) "To find the answer, ask a question."

All ponder Jack's "fortune." .

Bobby: (suddenly) You know what, I think that's quite enough fortune-telling for tonight.

Jack: (quickly) I agree.

All voice agreement.

Bobby: Besides, I know exactly what my fortune is, without even cracking the dough. It says, (using a hypnotizing inflection) "Bobby. You are about to fall into a very deep sleep."

All laugh, stand up to leave.
