"Missed Connections" - Part 4, by B.A. Rogers
SCENE 13. At the FBI operations van in the Page Industries parking lot
Inside the van, Tara and Lucy have headsets on. Dimitrius is in his FBI jacket. He's paying attention to the building.
Tara: (Listening first) Jack and Myles should be here in . . . five minutes.
Tara: (noticing her screen) Oh. Someone just accessed the third floor. The door nearest room 314, where the subject computer is.
Dimitrius: We need to get inside like now. Okay. I'm going to get a little closer and maybe have a chat with the security guard.
Cut to SUV, with Jack and Myles inside, pulling in to parking lot
Cut to inside the FBI van
Tara: (to Dimitrius, who is outside the building, near the main entrance) Room 314 was just accessed.
Cut to Dimitrius, outside the building, near the main entrance
Dimitrius: Backup?
Jack: (voice over) On your right.
Dimitrius looks to his right and sees Jack and Myles getting out of the SUV. They are in their FBI jackets and armed. Jack signals the SUV driver to move the vehicle some distance away from the building.
Cut to Tara and Lucy inside the van
Tara is watching security camera feed of what's happening inside the building lobby. The guard flips some switches, looks around furtively, then heads for the door.
Tara: (to all) Security guard is exiting the building.
Cut to Dimitrius outside the main door
Dimitrius steps out of the darkness, up to the guard as the guard exits the building.
Dimitrius: Stop. FBI.
The guard is startled. Suddenly he starts to run, heading in the direction of Jack and Myles.
Dimitrius: He's running.
Cut to Jack and Myles in the parking lot
Jack: (sees the guard) We got it.
Jack and Myles take off after the security guard. They are yelling "Stop. FBI." The guard keeps running with them in pursuit.
Cut between Tara inside the van
and Dimitrius outside the building's main door
Tara: (looking at screen) Subject computer is accessed.
Dimitrius: We don't have much time.
Tara: Additional backup on the way.
Tara rips off her headset and hands it to Lucy. Tara quickly checks her weapon and starts to put on her FBI jacket.
Cut to parking lot, by a chain-link fence
Myles is handcuffing the security guard, while Jack keeps watch.
Myles: (to the guard) You must know how wrong it is to run from the FBI.
Jack: (to Myles) You got this?
Myles nods yes.
Jack: Okay. I'm going to backup.
Jack takes off running.
Cut to hallway inside the building
Dimitrius and Tara are walking quickly toward the office with the computer.
Cut to inside the van
Lucy: (on the headset, looking at screen) Data entry . . . is starting.
Cut to hallway inside the building, outside the door to the office
Dimitrius and Tara acknowledge to each other that they are ready to enter. Dimitrius suddenly gives the door a sharp kick. It opens. We see blurry, choppy, some slow motion "combat footage." Man seated at the computer reaches for a gun. Dimitrius enters office first, with weapon pointed. Man, still seated at the desk, immediately shoots at Dimitrius. Dimitrius dodges bullet and it goes through the door. Tara enters office doorway, crouching lower. She immediately shoots man in the right shoulder. He drops gun.
Cut to parking lot
Jack is running toward the building. He hears the shots, somewhat faintly. Stops for a moment to listen. He runs again. As he rounds the corner, he sees paramedics getting out of a van and going inside the building.
Cut to hallway by the office
As Jack gets to the office, paramedics lead the man out under guard. Jack notices him holding his wounded shoulder. Jack goes inside. Tara is there. Dimitrius finishes a phone call as Jack walks in. Dimitrius hangs up.
Jack: (surveying the scene) Hey.
Dimitrius nods at Jack.
Tara: Hey.
Jack turns and looks behind him. He sees the bullet hole in the door. He looks again from where the man had been seated, following the line of fire to the hole in the door.
Jack: Wow. Headshot.
Dimitrius stares briefly at the bullet hole.
Dimitrius: Yeah. Headshot. (He looks at Tara.) Good shooting, Tara.
Tara nods.
Jack: Yes. (to Tara) Good shooting.
Tara: Thanks.
Cut to parking lot
Jack is in the passenger seat of the black SUV with the window rolled down. Dimitrius is standing by the vehicle, talking to Jack.
Dimitrius: I haven't even tried to reach Bobby yet.
Jack: Yeah.
Dimitrius: With the shooting . . . Tara and I have some extra paperwork to fill out tonight.
Jack: You better get going on it.
Dimitrius: Myles is going to ride back in the van.
Jack: Okay.
Dimitrius. So. (thinking) You might want to check in with Bobby and Sue.
Jack: I'll do that.
Dimitrius: Oh. And welcome home, Jack.
Jack smiles as he motions to the SUV driver to "go."
SCENE 14. At Sue's apartment
Jack is on the street outside Sue's building. He sees lights on in her apartment. He finally decides to go up. He knocks on Sue's door and Bobby answers. Bobby is in his stocking feet, tie off, his dress shirt is unbuttoned and open. He looks bedraggled.
Bobby stands in the doorway. Jack remains in the hallway.
Bobby: Whoa, what are you doing here?
Jack: What are you doing here?
Bobby: I was expecting Lucy.
Jack: I was expecting Lucy.
Lucy runs up.
Lucy: Lucy is here! (She motions Bobby back and Jack in to the apartment.) (to Bobby) Back! (to Jack) In!
Lucy shuts the door behind them and talks to Bobby. Jack watches the conversation back and forth between Lucy and Bobby.
Lucy: How is she?
Bobby: Better, thank God. I honestly didn't know what was happening to her.
Lucy: She has a terrible time with that sinus infection. Sometimes it just suddenly, like, knocks her out. Out of nowhere.
Bobby: You're telling me.
Lucy: Did she take medicine when she got home?
Bobby: Yes.
Lucy: Tea?
Bobby: Yes, I made her a cup of tea. (to Jack) I at least knew that much from my ever-loving mum.
Lucy: Green?
Bobby: (slowly) Black.
Lucy: With honey?
Bobby: Plain.
Lucy: (wrinkles her nose) Um. . . . Did she drink that?
Bobby: Yes. And she was very sweet about it, too.
Bobby sighs and addresses Jack.
Bobby: (to Jack) Look, mate, I know you've had a really rough day, and a worse night. But I couldn't leave Sue to make her way home by herself. I thought she was going to keel over at any moment. I gotta tell you, at times it was getting kind of scary.
Jack: (smiles a little) Yes. It was.
Lucy acknowledges Levi coming up. Levi paws Jack's leg.
Lucy: (to Jack) Levi is exactly right. You should go check on Sue. If she's awake, say hi. I mean, you have been gone for like ---
Jack: Forever.
Lucy: Exactly.
Cut to Sue's bedroom
Jack is standing in the doorway, a silhouette, but his face is visible. Sue is asleep with her back toward Jack. The covers are up pretty close under her chin.
Jack: Um. Sue? . . . I know you can't hear me . . .
Jack moves into the room, to Sue's bedside. He turns as if he is facing her.
Jack: Do you remember . . . One time you told me that, even though you couldn't hear a person, sometimes you still knew they were there. . . . Well, I'm here.
Jack looks at Sue for a minute. She stirs, then rolls over more on her back. Her hand falls open, up by her shoulder, nearest the edge of the bed.
Jack studies Sue's face to see if she is waking up. She is still sleeping. He decides to go. As he leaves, he takes a step forward and brushes Sue's hand with the back of his.
Jack: Okay. See you. Get better.
As he moves to leave, without opening her eyes, Sue very quietly takes his hand in hers. He looks at her, but her eyes are still closed. It seems she might be waking up. He moves closer. She puts his hand to her cheek. The touch seems to gently wake her up. Sue looks up at Jack, but very sleepily. She smiles at him.
Jack: Hi.
Sue tries to determine if he is real or a dream. Then she smiles more, but as she smiles, her eyes gently close again and, after a moment, her hand slips out of Jack's hand.
Jack scratches his forehead. He mutters "okay." He looks to see if Sue is asleep again. She seems to be. Then she stirs again, but doesn't open her eyes. The covers fall back a little and Jack sees that Sue is wearing the hockey jersey he gave her for Christmas.
Sue doesn't open her eyes and she appears to be asleep. But she smiles a little. Then, with her eyes still closed, she signs, "I missed you." The subtitle appears on-screen.
Jack understands what Sue said. He is surprised and happy. After hesitating, he then signs "I missed you" back to Sue, who is still sleeping. The subtitle appears on-screen.
Jack: (laughing) Well. You never told me you talk in your sleep.
Freeze frame.
