Continued from Part 3 . . .
"Ships at Sea," by B.A. Rogers
SCENE 8 On the beltway around Washington, D.C.
Jack and Sue are in a car in the right lane of an eight-lane highway. The traffic is starting and stopping. Jack looks ahead.
Jack: You know what? Let's get off at this exit. We can at least wait this out at a restaurant or something.
SCENE 9 - In a restaurant parking lot
Jack and Sue pull into the parking lot of a restaurant and park.
Cut to Jack and Sue walking from the car toward the restaurant door. Jack is limping very slightly. He looks in pain.
Sue: Are you limping?
Jack: No. I'm . . . just stiff from being in the car for what felt like ten hours.
Sue nods.
SCENE 10 - Inside the restaurant
Jack and Sue are at a table. They have finished eating. The waiter is removing the dishes from the table.
Jack: Sue.
Sue: Yes.
Jack: I really don't want to keep any secrets from you. . . . As a friend. I mean, I wouldn't want to keep secrets from a good friend.
Sue: (Unsure what Jack is talking about) I know there are things you can't talk about.
Jack: Yeah. But there are also things I don't want to talk about. Or, I don't know, that I'm just not ready to talk about.
Sue: Jack. You don't owe me any explanations. But, if you need help, if you need me to just listen, I want to do that for you.
Jack thinks for a minute.
Jack: It's not a big deal.
Sue: Maybe it is.
Jack: I got hurt on my assignment. And it wasn't until I got back and started dealing with it, that it's kind of made me mad. I don't like being held back.
Sue: Sometimes the hardest person to be patient with is yourself.
Jack nods. They are both silent for a moment.
Sue: (a little upset) How badly were you hurt?
Jack: A three-inch long, deep gash to the quadricept badly hurt.
Sue: With a knife?
Jack: Something like that. But, everything's going to be fine. It just takes a while for a muscle like that to rehab after an injury, surgery. It has to stretch out and . . . All that.
Sue: (suddenly tearful)
Jack: What's wrong?
Sue: (Now tears are flowing slightly) I don't know. (wiping her face) I, um . . . (trying to laugh a little, to make a little joke) . . . I'm surprising even myself. Full of surprises.
SCENE 11 - At Sue's apartment
Jack and Sue close the door to Sue's apartment behind them and start taking off their coats.
Sue: (eyes all the coats hung up by the doorway) Looks like a party.
Jack: (calling out) Lucy, you've got some explaining to do.
Lucy comes into the hallway. She has a cake knife with frosting on it in one hand and frosting on her other hand.
Lucy: Oh, hi, We have cake! Cookies!
Sue and Jack follow Lucy into the kitchen, where Dimitrius, Myles, Tara and Bobby are. A big box of fancy cookies is on the table and the top tier of a wedding cake, with bride and groom, is on a plate. The cake has one piece cut out of it.
Lucy: (to Jack and Sue) Are you kidding me? We had to have everyone over. As part of Sue's door prize, we have desserts freshly made by Chef Leon Franzetti himself. This is to die for.
Sue: (an aside, to Lucy) How was Myles?
Lucy: Very . . . human.
Myles: (by the table, motioning Jack and Sue to come in) Come in, come in. You people have to get your paws in here before it's all gone.
Sue: (surveying the table) So, what did you get?
Lucy and Myles resume serving the cake. Lucy is cutting the cake and Myles is handing out the plates.
Lucy: Walnut-fig cookies in this incredible pastry, with an apricot glaze, and an entire tier of Italian wedding cake.
Bobby: Are you sure this wasn't just an elaborate ruse for you two secretly getting married?
Myles: When that blessed day arrives, we'll be serving Tara's sour cream pound cake ---
Lucy: --- with strawberries ---
Myles: --- thank you very much.
Bobby: (to Myles) You don't like this fancy cake, Myles?
Lucy: (to Myles) Wait a minute. What do you mean by "when that blessed day arrives"?
Bobby: (to Lucy) He said it would be a blessed day when you and he got married.
Lucy: (to Bobby) Oh, hush your mouth.
Myles: (to Lucy, as he's serving cake) Yes, dear.
Lucy: (to Myles, feigning outrage) Ah! You want a piece of my wedding cake?
Lucy picks up a piece of cake with her fingers and shoves it into Myles' mouth.
Myles: (with his mouth full) Mmm. That's delicious.
Bobby: Yes, dear.
Jack: Yes, dear.
Sue: (turning to Jack in feigned outrage) Ah!
Jack: (Suddenly) Oh, no you don't ---
Jack pulls Sue's plate of cake away from her, even though she's making no move toward it. He takes a piece of cake and shoves it into Sue's mouth.
Sue eats the cake, laughing.
Sue signs "You're fast." The subtitle shows on-screen.
Jack: (putting plate of cake farther away). Uh-huh.
