Most people don't think about or relate the headache with their hairstyle. Automatically they consider other issues, such as time of the month, stress, low blood sugar and whatever else they can come up with.
Wearing tight hairstyles in your hair can cause headaches, scalp aches, hair breakage, and hair to fall out. However, the hair that falls out is not from the ponytail, it's from you pulling the hair so tight causing the hair to break off. You will not go bald from wearing a ponytail, braids, or a hat these are all myths.
The headache from the ponytail can be subtle or even a migraine depending on how tight you placed the hair. What can you do to avoid these nasty headaches yet still wear a tight ponytail?
Does The Hair Need Thinning?
Even though I don't wear my hair in a ponytail all the time, the heaviness and weight of my hair causes headaches. My hair is thick and course. By taking a thinning shear and making a few snips into my hair, it helps remove excess weight and bulk. Too much weight on the head not only causes headaches, it can affect your neck too.
Wearing The Right Ponytail Holders?
Rubber bands and the elastics with the metal on them are a no no. They pull the hair and cause damage.Opt for the hair scrunchies. The hair scrunchies are soft, fabric coated and comfortable on the head.
Prevent Headaches From Ponytail or Braid Wearing
Before you place your ponytail into your hair, place a drop of conditioner or oil onto the scalp. This way when you place the hairband on, it will slide slightly and not be so tight on the scalp.
If you wear a ponytail all day long take some headache medicine before you create the ponytail, and again an hour before you take the ponytail or braid out.
Try different ponytail styles. For some people the top of the head might not hurt, and for others the back of the head might be sensitive. Results will vary on each individual.
When securing the band, only wrap it around twice, do not keep wrapping until the band gets super tight and the hair is hard to pull through. This will kill your scalp.
Help Headache After Removing Ponytail
I know when I remove my ponytails, my head and scalp feels so heavy and funky it actually hurts. DO NOT brush the hair right away. Take your fingers and massage the scalp and hair for 5 minutes. Then brush the hair lightly. If the headache continues, take some more medicine and allow your hair and scalp to breathe.
