When it comes to the term sugar addiction it basically means a person has to have foods with high sugar content often and they often times binge on these foods as well. Most people don't even realize that they may have a sugar addiction until someone points it out to them or they attempt to cut back on sugar to lose weight. Although this type of food addiction can hinder your diet efforts there are ways that you can get over these addictions.
Sugar Addiction Symptoms
Most of the time sugar addiction symptoms are not evident until you try to cut back on sugar or go on a low carb diet where you are limited to almost no sugar in your diet. Some of the sugar withdrawal symptoms you may encounter are fatigue, nausea, headaches, depression, and tremors. You may also constantly think of sugary foods and when you will get your next fix. You may also find that you can't stay on a strict diet with very little sugar because you often find yourself giving in to cravings and binging on sugary foods.
There are also ways to recognize sugar addiction symptoms right now as well. All you need to do is look at your average diet for a few days to see if you exhibit any sugar addiction symptoms listed below
1. You can't go one day without having something sweet to eat (not including fruit or other natural foods).
2. Whenever you get emotional, whether happy or sad, you tend to overeat on sugar foods.
3. You find yourself overeating sweets or eating them even though you are full at the time.
4. You are obsessed about when the next time you will get your sugar fix. For example, if you just ate a piece of candy you count down the hours until you can have another piece.
Overcoming Food Addictions
If you find that you suffer from sugar addiction symptoms, you can still get help and learn how to eat healthy and cut out the sugar from your diet. It is still possible to lose weight even when you are addicted to sugar.
The first thing you need to do is become aware of when you are craving sugar and what type of mood you are in. A lot of people who are addicted to sugar often crave it because they are emotional eaters and it gives them the "high" they need at the time. By keeping track of when you are craving sweets and how you are feeling, both emotionally and physically you can identify what your triggers are.
Next, you need to start adjusting your diet as well as your thinking. Some people will replace sugar with artificial sweeteners but this actually makes the problem worse. Instead, incorporate more complex carbohydrates into your diet such as whole grains and vegetables. You can also add in more natural sugars like fruits to help give your body the sugar it desires but in a healthy way.
Don't completely deprive yourself of all sugar as this often leads to sugar binges and depression afterwards. You may find that changing your diet and becoming aware of your sugar addiction will actually have you craving sweets a lot less in a matter of only a few days.
Suffering from sugar addiction symptoms can wreak havoc on your body, especially if you are already overweight to begin with. It's not healthy to binge on foods that have high sugar contents even if you aren't overweight. By recognizing your food addiction and making a resolution to change your diet and overcome the addiction you can start living a much healthier life and not be a slave to sugar or any food anymore.
