The weather that night was bad, bitterly cold with high winds, but that didn't stop Sugar Bear fans from coming out to see them live, some from as far away as Nashville, TN.
Sugar Bear, along with his brothers Ronzo and Kort put on a show for this small venue worthy of a large concert hall. Their set was a mix of original material and peppered with covers, ranging from the Beatles to Stevie Ray Vaughn. Sugar even told the crowd if there is something you want to hear, let us know.
Well one local young lady asked not only to hear some Janis Joplin, but asked if she could perform the songs with them. The band was happy to let her take the microphone, and once she started belting out in classic Janis style( the title of the song escapes me here) they, along with the crowd, was swept away by the power and sound that Jessica (Jessie) Lean Goggans had. Perfectly mixing in with the the band, you would swear they had performed together for years. The crowd hollered for more, and Jessie gave them one more, with Me and Bobby McGee.
During the breaks between sets, Sugar, Ronzo and Kort mixed with the patrons, stopping a talking to everyone there, shaking hands and making friends. Many there already 'knew' Sugar Bear from social media sites such asFace Book, My Space and Twitter, but to actually meet each other face to face was a delight for not only the fans but for the band as well. " After chatting for so long on-line, it is like we are old friends" said Sugar, "But to actually meet everyone is a thrill for us. This is why we tour."
One of the surprise highlights of the night was when they performed the classic rock of Edgar Winter's 'Frankenstein' complete with a fiery drum solo that brought the house to their feet. Kort, the drummer and youngest of the group, is a natural on the drums. He plays feverishly, with hair flying and twirling the sticks between beats, he feels every note. His style has earned him the nickname 'Wildman'.
Ronzo, on bass, kept perfect rhythm going. And accomplished vocalist as well, his gravel growling voice was showcased with Stevie Ray Vaughn's 'Cold Shot'.
Sugar Bear himself ripped of some guitar riffs that floored the fans. Sugar Bears history of playing guitar is impressive, playing for a time with N-Sync and other bands.
This band was as comfortable playing George Thoughgood as they were ZZ Top. But they really shine when they play the blues or their own tunes with their unique southern rock/blues feel.
They are working on their next album now, 'Blue Collar Empire'. Their debut album, 'Half Nuts' is available on www.101distribution.com. The band is also aready working towards their next Jammin for the South tour.
