Sugar Free Recipe for Peanut Butter Treats

Jared DuBach
With a nation consumed by high fat, high sugar diets, many are trying to avoid diabetes and heart disease before it starts by switching to reduced sugar and sugar free diets. With an array of sugar substitutes approved by the Food and Drug Administration, those once fanatical over sugar finally have reasonable substitutes.

Sweets are the hardest thing for people to give up it seems, so here's a sugar free recipe to hopefully get you down the right track. And it's great for kids. Just don't tell them there's no sugar in it. They won't be able to tell at first, but as soon as you tell them they won't want to eat it anymore, saying "it tastes funny." It seems some adults are that way too. Be advised that this contains molasses and honey, which according to Dr. Gott, are natural sugars and therefore violate his "No Flour, No Sugar" diet.

Sugar Free Peanut Butter Treats

2 tablespoons, plus 1 ½ teaspoons of Grape Nuts or similar non-name brand cereal

2 tablespoons plus 1 ½ teaspoons of oatmeal (not instant, but the quick cooking kind)

4 tablespoons of raisins

2 tablespoons peanut butter (I use organic or no sugar added varieties to keep this truly sugar free. You can also substitute almond or cashew butter if you like for a change of pace)

1 teaspoon honey (This doesn't conform to the Dr. Gott "No Flour, No Sugar" diet in that on his diet, honey is forbidden as an unrefined natural sugar)

1 teaspoon unsulfured molasses (again, doesn't conform to Dr. Gott's diet)

½ teaspoon vanilla extract

2-3 tablespoons water

4 tablespoons Sweet 'n' Low

Mix together. Divide into two portions, wrap in foil and freeze.
