"Sugar" Shane Mosley Using Steroids?

Any athlete's use of performance enhancing drugs is not acceptable no matter what sport it is they are involved with. Therefore, it is very surprising to know that the World Boxing Council has begun an investigation of four-time world champion "Sugar" Shane Mosley. Shane Mosley is using steroids? Shane Mosley has been a very celebrated fighter in the sport of boxing over the past years. Everyone knows about the former baseball players, Jose Canseco and Mark McGwire using performance enhancing drugs, but Shane Mosley? Due to the disbelief, I had to do some research on this.

According to the New York daily News, a little bit over three months after defeating Oscar De La Hoya for the WBO junior middleweight title, Mosley testified under oath in front of a grand jury, that he used steroids and something called EPO during his training camp for the fight. WBC president Jose Sulaiman told the New York Daily News, that this was a matter of serious concern to them, as well it should be. "The WBC rules state that we must have a hearing," said Sulaiman. He also advised that the use of those types of performance enhancing medicines where prohibited by the WBC.

Mosley insisted that he had no idea that the medicines he took were illegal. When you think about the type of guy Shane Mosley is, it's kind of hard not to believe him. "Sugar" Shane Mosley's image in boxing has always been one of a pretty honest, good guy. The

WBC is acting off of press reports they've only seen. WBC rules on these types of violations allow the organization to disqualify or fine fighters regardless of the fact that the fight happened years ago. If Mosley did knowingly take performance enhancing drugs during training for any of his fights, penalizing him this far out would be fair, but if the man did not know that he was taking something illegal, the WBC could have some mercy on him.

The WBC has a responsibility to make sure that justice is served and to make an example out of this situation so that other fighters won't think that they can get away with using illegal substances to help them train for a fight. Hopefully, the hearing is postponed until after Mosley's next match up. They should test him for performance enhancing drugs now, to make sure that he is not using them to train for his next bout. Mosley has a fight scheduled in January 2009, against the WBA welterweight champion Antonio Margarito. This situation will likely distract Mosley's training camp, but hopefully not very much, as we fight fans expect to see a good fight.
