Sugar is the Sweetest Cause for Wrinkles

Skyler Raine
There is nothing worse than spotting that first wrinkle, well, apart from spotting the second, third and fourth! There are plenty of things that we can do to reduce wrinkles such as expensive creams and surgery but surely it's better to try and avoid getting them in the first place? Being kinder to your skin, not smoking and using moisturizers are all great ways to slow down those wrinkles. But what about sugar? Or more specifically white sugar? Does having it in your coffee have an affect on your wrinkles? Or do those yummy candy bars help your wrinkles shine through? Unfortunately, yes.

Sugar is used in pretty much everything from tomato ketchup to chocolate. In fact the average American will eat up to 3 pounds of sugar each week! There are several reasons for this. One is that people use sugar as comfort food and as such can consume large amount of sugar in one sitting. Another reason is that people just don't realize how much sugar is in the food that they're eating. You can even find sugar in processed meats such as ham! This large amount of sugar that is in our diets is not good for us and can lead to serious health problems. These problems include heart disease, digestion problems and a reduced immune system. It also affects your skin. When sugar goes into your system it attaches itself onto proteins in the bloodstream which together make nasty AGE's (advanced glycation end products). This in turn affects your collagen and elastin. As we all know collagen and elastin is what keeps us looking young and our skin plump. Without collagen or elastin our skin starts to sag and look old. This is what gives us wrinkles. Of course it is not just sugar that kills off our collagen. This process also happens as we get older and we hit the menopause. Eating too much sugar simply speeds up this process.

So to summarize by eating sugar you are killing off your collagen and elastin making your skin saggier and give you wrinkles. So now you know the facts and figures, it is time to ditch the sugar not just for your waistline but for your face too! If you want to stay trim and keep yourself looking young and healthy then avoid that sugar and make sure that those wrinkles stay away for good!
