If you have ever known a friend or family member with the medical condition known as asthma, then you know it is a serious condition. Asthma is a chronic condition of the respiratory system that affects the airways. The airways of a person with asthma can occasionally become constricted or inflamed causing an asthma attack. The airways of persons with asthma often have an excess of mucus that can be triggered by a variety of stimuli. An asthma attack may be triggered by outside stimuli such as smoking, stress, changes in air temperature, exercise, pet dander and others. Knowing natural remedies in the event a person close to you has one of these asthma attacks while in your presence can be vital to their survival.

The first thing to remember when a person is suffering from and asthma is that when they are grasping for air, you need to remain calm. You can sometimes talk a person through an attack by remaining calm and talking them down until they are calm. When the airways become constricted, the person will often panic. Panic can make an asthma attack worse. If you can sit the person down and speak to them in a calm voice to slow their breathing, you may be able to walk them through the attack. Speak to them and breathe with them. Say thing like you are ok and we are going to breathe together. Say and take a slow deep breath with them. Then say we are going to slowly release the breath and release with them. Repeat this process over and over until the attack subsides.

Another effective method for treating asthma attacks is by taking an open jar of honey and holding it under the nose of the victim. The honey can also be taken internally by mouth. You may mix the honey with milk or water if preferred. The honey is actually said to lessen the excess mucus in the air passages. The honey effect should last for at least one hour.

Surprising as it may sound, dry figs may help patients with asthma. Dry figs help clear excess mucus from the bronchial tubes and air passage ways. Three to four dry figs should be cleaned and soaked in a warm water mixture overnight. When the asthmatic patient wakes up in the morning, they should eat the figs as well as drink the water in which they were soaked in. You can use this remedy daily to help eliminate excess mucus.

A preventative treatment for asthma that may be administered in the morning and in the evening is ginger tea with minced garlic pods in it. This may substitute as a natural expectorant and may ease constricted airways.

It is also said that turmeric can be used as a natural treatment for asthma sufferers. Two to three times per day one teaspoon of turmeric should be mixed with a glass of milk and ingested by the patient. This mixture works best if taken before meals or on an empty stomach.

After growing up with a sister that suffered from birth, I suggest the breathing exercises and honey as my first choices for asthma treatment. I also suggest using a rainbow vacuum cleaner to clean your home with. These vacuums use water to suck the dust out of the air and are better for asthma suffers than normal vacuums that put dust back into the air. I also suggest using an air filter to help with the dust particles in the air. Also, natural remedies are no cure and persons suffering from asthma should heed advice given by the physician first and foremost. Often asthma sufferers can use prescription medicine in conjunction with natural remedies for effective treatment.
