Suggestions for Creating a Mother's Day Time Capsule

Antoinette McGowan
Time capsules have been used for many occasions to create a memorial of an event. Time capsules are buried and dug up at a predetermined date and time. With time capsules being used for some many occasions, why not create a Mother's Day time capsule. With this time capsule you can create a memorial for a special person and not just a special event.

With a Mother's Day time capsule you do not have to bury it to make it special. Instead you will just pack it away until a set time and date. This way even Mom's living in an apartment can take pleasure from this special gift. After all not everyone has a yard to be burying a time capsule in or would want to bury one in their yard.

To get started a box, tote or trunk will work to create your time capsule. You can decorate the box with paper mache, cloth or just draw pictures on the time capsule. Get creative and decorate the time capsule in any way that makes it special to you and your mother. Another great idea is for each child to take the time to decorate their own area of the time capsule their own way.

Now is time to start adding things to the Mother's Day time capsule that will make it special. For children old enough to write, they can take the time to write their own personal letter to Mom that she can read when the time capsule is opened in the future. For those who can not write then a picture drawn for Mom will work. Remember Mom will not be reading or seeing the artwork until the preset open date for the Mother's Day time capsule. So make sure not to show her.

Next find some pictures that include Mom with each of the kids that can be placed into the time capsules. Photos that bring back memories are a great addition to any time capsule and since this one is for Mom include any photo that will bring back fond memories for her.

Also including her favorite perfume or bath salts can be an added touch. This will give her a special gift as well when she does open the time capsule. Just think about what will make Mom happy and work towards adding those items. Each person will have their own idea of what should be in the time capsule so let everyone contributing to it place anything they wish into it.

Once all items are added it is time to seal the time capsule. With a box just tape it up really well and then decorate the tape. With a tote use paper mache or cloth to place over the lid and then glue it down. However with a trunk you will just need to lock it and remember not to lose the key. When the Mother's Day time capsule is complete, present it to Mom on Mother's Day along with the date and time she can open
