Dumbledore announces to the students at the Welcoming Feast that there will be a Triwizard Tournament this year. The Triwizard Tournament is a competition where the different schools compete against each other. It was stopped because the competition started getting too dangerous.
For the Triwizard Tournament, a student from each of the three schools is selected by the Goblet of Fire. The students who put their name in the Goblet must be at least seventeen years old because the competition is so dangerous. The Goblet of Fire selects Viktor Krum to represent Durmstrang Institute, Fleur Delacour to represent Beauxbatons, and Cedric Diggory to represent Hogwarts.
The Goblet of Fire also selects Harry Potter, despite the fact that Harry never put his name into the Goblet of Fire, and he is too young for the competition. The Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher, Professor Alastor Moody, offers to help Harry perform the tasks necessary to complete the competition.
The first task is to retrieve a golden egg from the nest of a dragon. The second task is to find something that has been taken from you and been placed in Hogwarts' lake. The final task is to go through a dangerous maze. The Triwizard Cup is hidden at the end of the maze.
After completing the first two tasks, Harry Potter and Cedric Diggory agree to help each other through the maze and share the Triwizard Cup. When Harry Potter and Cedric Diggory grab the Triwizard Cup, they are transported to a cemetery where Peter Pettigrew is waiting.
Pettigrew is ordered to kill Diggory, while Harry is stuck to a tombstone. Using an old bone, his hand, and some of Harry's blood, Pettigrew restores Lord Voldemort. Lord Voldemort now has some of Harry Potter's blood, making him unaffected by the magic protecting Harry.
Lord Voldemort then challenges Harry Potter to a duel, but their wands are brothers. The streams from their wands intertwine, creating a Priori Incantatem effect, which causes the echoes from the spirits of Lord Voldemort's victims to come out from the wand.
One of the echoes is Harry's parents, which protects him long enough to escape back to Hogwarts with the body of Diggory. Harry is then attacked by Alastor Moody who turns out to be Barty Crouch, Jr., impersonating Moody by using a Polyjuice Potion. Harry is saved by Dumbledore, McGonagall, and Snape from Barty Crouch, Jr.
Barty Crouch, Jr., confesses that it was he who put Harry's name into the Goblet of Fire. The Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge orders for the soul of Barty Crouch, Jr., to be sucked out by a Dementor, as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire comes to an end.
